America at 250: Revisiting the Ideas That Continue to Shape Our Nation

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, I've found myself thinking less about the headlines of the moment and more about the ideas that have shaped the United States of America for nearly two and a half centuries.

One of the privileges of working for CommPRO and the That Said with Michael Zeldin podcast is the opportunity to have conversations with remarkable thinkers whose perspectives stay with you long after the interview ends. That's certainly true of our discussions with Jeffrey Rosen, CEO Emeritus of the National Constitution Center.

These are conversations about principles, not political parties. They focus on the ideas that have guided our nation since its founding: virtue, liberty, happiness and the ongoing pursuit of a more perfect union.

We first welcomed Jeffrey to discuss his book, The Pursuit of Happiness: How Classical Writers on Virtue Inspired the Lives of the Founders and Defined America. In our conversation, he draws on classical Greek and Roman philosophy to explain how the Founders understood “the pursuit of happiness” not as personal success, but as a lifelong commitment to virtue, character, learning and civic responsibility.

We recently welcomed Jeffrey back to discuss his latest book, The Pursuit of Liberty, which explores the constitutional debates between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. This ongoing struggle to balance liberty and power has shaped pivotal moments in U.S. history, from Abraham Lincoln’s fight against slavery and southern secession to Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. It continues to influence our understanding of freedom, governance and democracy today. It's a fascinating reminder that many of the questions we grapple with in 2026 are rooted in conversations that began nearly 250 years ago.

Together, these conversations offer a look at both the inner virtues and the constitutional debates that have shaped the country and the American Dream.

As communicators, we're in the business of ideas. We help people understand one another, build trust and navigate change. That's why these conversations resonate so deeply with our community. They remind us that thoughtful dialogue has always been at the heart of America's story.

As we celebrate our nation's 250th birthday, I hope you'll take some time to listen to both conversations. Together, they offer a meaningful perspective on where we've been, the principles that continue to guide us, and the responsibilities we all share as citizens and communicators.
