In a recent webinar titled "Breaking Barriers: Advancing Women’s Leadership In Business," a panel of accomplished speakers delved into crucial discussions surrounding gender equality, career advancement, and fostering inclusive workplaces.

The panel featured distinguished speakers from various industries, including Liesl Riddle, Ph.D., Dean of George Washington University's College of Professional Studies, emphasizing student empowerment and innovative program leadership. Soni K. Basi, Ph.D., Global Chief People Officer at Edelman, highlighted her expertise in talent development and digital-first HR initiatives. Amy Coles, Global Head of HR & Chief Talent Officer at Finn Partners, brought insights from her extensive PR background, emphasizing the alignment of HR with strategic communication. Tamla Oates-Forney, a seasoned HR executive, shared experiences from Fortune 500 companies, including USAA and General Electric, showcasing her expertise in organizational leadership. Suzanne Ogle, CEO of Southern Gas Association, provided insights into sustainability and ESG leadership, emphasizing her role as a national thought leader in the energy industry and her focus on America's energy outlook for 2050.

The conversation was led by Leslie Grossman, Faculty Director, Executive Women's Leadership Program, George Washington University Center for Excellence in Public Leadership, and spotlighted lessons learned and offered actionable insights for navigating the corporate landscape as a woman. Here, we will focus on the three most impactful ideas that emerged from the session.

Firstly, the panel emphasized the importance of Clear Pathways and Mentorship. Having clear pathways, mentors, and open conversations is crucial for women to navigate through various stages of their careers. This support structure helps women seize opportunities and overcome obstacles effectively. By providing mentorship and guidance, companies can empower women to develop essential skills, navigate corporate politics, and advance their careers confidently.

Secondly, effective Communication and Flexibility were highlighted as fundamental elements in fostering inclusive workplaces. Embracing diverse communication styles and accommodating different needs brings people together within the workplace, creating an environment where everyone can thrive. By fostering open communication channels and flexibility in work arrangements, companies can promote collaboration, creativity, and innovation while supporting the diverse needs of their workforce.

Lastly, the panel addressed the issue of the "broken rung" in the corporate ladder. Tackling this challenge requires concerted efforts from both companies and women themselves. Companies must actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, ensuring equal opportunities for career advancement. Women, on the other hand, need to advocate for themselves and actively seek opportunities for advancement. By addressing systemic barriers and empowering women to advocate for their needs, companies can create a more equitable and inclusive workplace culture.

In addition to these key takeaways, the panelists emphasized the importance of creating supportive and inclusive environments, advocating for mental health support, and fostering allyship and mentorship. By supporting these areas, companies can create environments where women feel valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

In conclusion, this Women’s History Month webinar shed light on the multifaceted journey of women in the corporate world and underscored the importance of fostering inclusive environments where women can thrive. By embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion, companies can unlock the full potential of their workforce and contribute to building a fair and inclusive society.
