“The most important thing about performative communications is that they don’t acknowledge any responsibility for anything,” Stovall explains. “It sort of takes the issue, the problem, which is generally something systemic and not a one-off (problem) – when you’re talking about social justice issues and when you’re working in the DEI space, none of this is out of the blue. All of this is part of a systemic inequity that has been existing for a long time.”
