A Celebration of International Women’s Day – Women in the World of Tech

Brian Wallace, Founder & President, NowSourcing

It was only in very recent memory that the United States began to recognize the powerful contribution women have on our country’s history. In 1980 President Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th National Women’s History Week. Several years later, it was extended into all of March, and of course International Woman’s Day is March 8th.

On this day, we are asked to “Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.” We don’t need to tell you that too many people across the world continue to be marginalized. As a female owned and operated technology business, we strongly believe it takes each person to take action and to make change.

We shine a light on current technology statistics and highlight some startling figures with this graphic from NowSourcing. Young girls are discouraged from choosing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and lack female mentors, which would help bolster their early educational interests.

At Evia Events, not only do we employee females of all ages in leadership roles, we invite all ages and demographics into the workplace. Our hiring process is reflected with our commitment to track the seniority of mentorship that employees receive. As a GEN-certified business, we are aware that men have traditionally had access to more senior mentors who have sponsored them into senior roles, while women have historically had ‘horizontal’ mentors. By intentionally matching mentors and mentees at Evia, we ensure that everyone has equal access to mentors who can turn into sponsors.

Gender bias still exists, but there are some other great examples of tech companies that are closing the gap. With them, we honor International Woman’s Day’s theme to #ChooseToChallenge and invite all colleagues and industry peers to take action every day to make change. It is everyone’s “job” to pay attention, to highlight where there is gender bias and inequality and to continue inviting woman to be thought leaders.

Embrace Change – Marian Salzman on International Women’s Day 2021

Editor’s Note:  CommPRO reached out to Marian Salzman, Senior Vice President, Communications at Philip Morris International to share her thoughts about the celebration of International Women’s Day 2021.

About: Marian Salzman, senior vice president, global communications at Philip Morris International (PMI), has been named one of the world’s top five trendspotters and is among the world’s most-awarded public relations executives. In recent years, she has been listed in PRWeek’s Global Power Book and as a PR News Top Woman in PR. She is also the recipient of the She Runs It 2017 Changing the Game Award, has been inducted into the PRWeek Hall of Femme and Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame, and was on the Holmes Report Top Innovators List and on Business Insider’s 25 Most Powerful PR People.

In April 2018, Marian moved to Switzerland and embarked on her greatest challenge to date, heading global communications at Philip Morris International (PMI) as it embarks on its journey to build a smoke-free future. Charged with developing a proactive, multilayered communications program to accelerate PMI’s vision, Marian is forging active and productive alliances with NGOs, advocacy groups, regulators and other parties involved in shaping the environment in which a smoke-free future can be realized.

Since Marian took charge of global communications at PMI, she has made bold strategic moves to transform the function itself and how it sits within the company. Her goal: reintroduce PMI into, as she puts it, “civilized society” and engage that society in meaningful conversations about the future of tobacco. Reporting directly to Global CEO André Calantzopoulos, she is remaking the group—including directly overseeing a staff of almost 100 communications professionals based on three continents who are responsible for media relations, scientific engagement, content development, crisis management, internal communications, sponsorships and more. She is ensuring that PMI is positioned at the forefront of a new discussion about tobacco and the reduced-risk products (RRPs) available today and in development.

Marian Salzman—A Globally Recognized Trendspotter

Before joining PMI, Marian was CEO of Havas PR North America for nearly a decade, and chaired its global PR assets known as its PR Collective (networked but not a network). There, she reshaped the creative output, creating one of the most buzzed-about boutique agencies in North America and achieving top-five status at key U.S. and global awards shows. Marian also served on the Havas Worldwide general managers group and as co-chairman of the company’s first international steering committee for its social media assets. In recognition of these efforts, she was named PRWeek’s PR Professional of the Year for 2011.

Prior to Havas PR, Marian was the chief marketing officer at both Porter Novelli and JWT Worldwide and the chief strategic officer at Euro RSCG Worldwide (Havas Creative). Her first international assignment was in the 1990s, as the Amsterdam-based lead of TBWA’s Department of the Future. Marian was also an entrepreneur who launched American Dialogue (Cyberdialogue) focus groups in cyberspace back in the early 1990s, when the online world was seen as a place for geeks and oddballs, ultimately selling the company a few years later. Her business partner then was advertising agency legend Jay Chiat; ultimately, he appointed her Chiat/Day’s first head of emerging media and consumer insights ahead of Chiat/Day merging with TBWA International. Among her most famous consumer campaigns are the launch of “metrosexual” to create a marketplace for SABMiller’s Peroni (metrosexual became the word of the year in 2003 and continues to be used around the globe more than 15 years later); Pepsi’s “It’s Like This”; and “It’s America Online.”

As a sought-after speaker, she presents across the globe on topics from health trends to branding to generational differences and more. Marian is the author or co-author of 16 books, including Buzz, the first big business book on buzz marketing, and her latest, Agile PR: Expert Messaging in a Hyper-Connected, Always-on World (2017; AMACOM). Marian is an honors graduate of Brown University.

Women today face overwhelming societal pressure to be “everything to everyone.” Left physically exhausted, mentally depleted and often feeling personally and professionally inadequate, it comes as no surprise that today’s definition of success falls woefully short for professional women both in the office and at home.

International Women’s Day gives us a global opportunity to champion a new definition of success for working women from all walks of life. Acknowledging the unique value in employing women that are refreshed and motivated, leading fulfilled and meaningful lives both inside and outside of the office; we have an opportunity to celebrate a well-rounded, new definition of success that gives women the right to create a life that opens the door to profound professional achievement and also respects and values the importance of family.

As women, we are powerfully capable of collectively demanding better for ourselves and our families. Moving away from those conversations that divide and isolate us in our professional and personal environments, we can come together to open a dialogue that encourages us all to be our very best selves by accepting that success looks different for everyone; acknowledging that a life that doesn’t exist outside of a thriving career is not an accurate measure of success.

Today’s working woman is profoundly creative, talented, ambitious and grounded in a deep desire to achieve great heights in both their careers and in their home lives. We are not a society of “either/or.” It is time for us to be a society of “and,” acknowledging that true success gives all women the chance to explore professional pursuits and also make time for self-care, balance and personal enrichment outside of the office.

This is our time. As mothers, sisters, friends, selves. International Women’s Day is a celebration of how far we have come and how much farther we plan to go. Together, we can achieve more and set the standard for success on a global scale. Together, we can create a better example for those who matter most in our lives. Together, we can make sure every day of our very short lives is lived to the fullest; conquering our dreams, achieving great heights and being present in those powerful memories and moments that mark the lives of those who have loved and are loved.

Happy International Women’s Day: Now’s Your Time to Speak Up

Happy International Women’s Day: Now’s Your Time to Speak Up- Wendy GlavinWendy Glavin, Founder & CEO, Wendy Glavin Agency

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress, a strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.

Purple is the official color of International Women’s Day, founded more than a century ago after some 15,000 women marched in New York City to demand better working conditions and voting rights.

Campaigns like, “HeforShe,” initiated by the UN, Times Up, #MeToo, The Women’s March, Poverty is Sexism, and others have raised these issues to the point where newsmakers and people are discussing them every day. For the millions of people who have worked for decades, it’s an opportunity to make your voice known, without fear of reprisal.

Today, leaders, like Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, are taking their own measures to ensure gender equality is achieved in the workplace. Sandberg launched the #MentorHer campaign with LeanIn.org to help fill the mentorship void that many women experience. Through this campaign, men will be provided with tips on how to be an effective mentor to a female colleague, as well as insights on why mentoring is important.

“People with mentors are more likely to get promotions – yet women are less likely than men to be mentored, and women of color get the least support of all,” said Sandberg.

Happy International Women’s Day - Now’s Your Time to Speak UpMelinda Gates kicked off 2018 by proclaiming “it’s time for a new era for women” in a Time magazine op-ed. “With a new focus on women’s economic empowerment, connecting women to markets, making sure they have access to financial services, and empowering them to help themselves, we aim to help tear down the barriers that keep half the world from leading a full life,” Gates wrote in an op-ed for Quartz published Monday.

“Change doesn’t happen overnight,” said Audra Jenkins, chief diversity and inclusion officer of Randstad North America. “To move the needle in a meaningful way, it is the utmost responsibility of corporate leaders to invest in programs that will help retool and empower women for future success.”

Women’s equality was a hot topic this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where global business and government leaders gather annually to discuss pressing social and economic issues.

Dozens of panels and events have been held on gender, diversity and inclusion, and two specifically focused on sexual harassment. This year’s gathering was the first to be chaired by all women, including IMF chief Christine Lagarde and IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, and featured the biggest ever percentage of female attendees, though still in the minority at 20 percent.

“What we need to do in government and in business, and in every aspect of our lives, is to continue to make sure that we create an open environment for this to be discussed and that we continue to shine the bright lights on these issues wherever they still exist. Companies should lead by example,” said Christopher Nassetta, CEO of Hilton.

This last year has been rough with new accusations of sexual harassment and assault. Contracts are being canceled, careers are being ended and new investigations are being launched. Others are coming forward to condemn or defend the accused or the accuser.

“The good news is that with all this attention, we have a profound opportunity. It is truly our time to make the difference. Our focus needs to be on the actions and attitudes we can adopt that will change the environment so that true gender equality becomes a reality.

In an environment where men and women have equal power we will have shifted the norm, where sexual harassment is a rarity and is not used for power and control, “ reported Forbes, February, 2018.

Women’s Entrepreneurship Day to be Held November 17th at the United Nations

CommPRO Editorial Staff

The Annual International Women’s Entrepreneurship Day [WED] convenes at the United Nations in New York City on Friday, November 17th, 2017 to empower women and girls globally to help alleviate poverty. The grassroots mission and message to empower women and girls to become active participants in the economy by igniting a network of women leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs to initiate startups, drive economic expansion, and advance communities around the world. In order to achieve this ambitious goal, WED builds and catalyzes the vital networks of like-minded individuals and organizations that women business leaders need to realize their full potential and change the world.

“Historically, women worldwide have been underpaid, undervalued, underrepresented, underfunded and underestimated. We are dedicated, determined and driven to change this global imbalances,” stated Wendy Diamond, Founder of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day. WED convenes Business Leaders, Government Officials and Civil society in 144 countries & 100 Universities to collaborate and find solutions in critical areas of entrepreneurship eco-systems, education and policy creation to empower women in business worldwide.

Since this campaign launched in 2013, WED has helped women around the world in various ways:

  • In Jordan, the group funded 500 Syrian refugee girls so they could attend high school.
  • In Oman, they launched an initiative to empower women and girls to vote against arranged marriage.
  • And in Uruguay, a partnership with a local university offered scholarships to the girls.

Looking ahead, WED will be announcing the following goals on November 17th:

  • Launch of the #ChooseWOMEN global platform, the largest directory of women-owned businesses in the world, allowing anyone, anywhere, to easily find and support women-owned businesses
  • Support 1000 impoverished women through microloans to start their own businesses
  • Expanded initiatives in Asia (New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai) and the Middle East (Yemen and Morocco)

Diamond was inspired to launch WED and the movement after spending time in the Honduras with the Adelante Foundation, a group which provides microcredit to locally impoverished women. “I saw first-hand how these start-up loans could change a woman’s life, and her family’s, by investing in her future and providing the opportunity for her children to attend school,” said Diamond.

#ChooseWOMEN

WED will launch the #ChooseWOMEN initiative on November 29th, 2017, a global social media initiative inspiring women and men to pledge their support to women in business.

Celebration of International Women’s Day – Opinion

By Julia Shewchuk, Owner, Serenity Acres FarmContributor at MotherEarthNews.com

Julia ShewchukEvery day is International Women’s Day in my eyes! Every day should be Mother’s Day or Father’s Day or Valentine’s Day! We shouldn’t need one special day to point out how fabulous Women are, Mothers, Fathers, Husbands, or Wives. We shouldn’t need one special day to celebrate, for that day only, Women, Mothers, Fathers, Husbands, or Wives. Every person should be made to feel special every single day

I am proud of being a woman and proud of belonging to a generation who, in general, broke through glass ceilings, achieved many new milestones and still had the confidence to be a woman. The previous generation of woman needed to behave like men to achieve success, we were given a choice.

But, too many woman, here in the US and in the world, still don’t have freedom of choice to live the life they desire, to pursue education, or even to drive. As long as these inequalities exist, we cannot rest on our laurels, but have to continue to instill the values of human equality, of “you can be who you want to be” and “achieve what you set your mind to” in our daughters and sons, friends and family.

I say human equality, not women equality, because no segregation or separation of people into specific groups is healthy for human kind. Race, gender, age, economic status, education, profession and looks are too often used as dividers, not unifiers.

In my experience, most woman are better suited to be these unifiers than men, even while pursuing their own independence and careers and from experience as a woman who owns her own business, is a female farmer, and has been in corporate life, here are some pretty simple guidelines for being a unifier and leader:

A rising tide lifts all ships. One woman’s success enables others to succeed. Bring others along in your wake. Be a mentor and share your experiences.

Don’t judge by the cover, especially the younger generation. More often than not, they will surprise you.

Don’t judge and discriminate against men. Behaving like the good old boys club doesn’t help anyone. Be an example and be fair to everyone.

Don’t give up. Making a life change is scary, but even scarier is regret of not having done something.

Do communicate your expectations, worries, loves, and likes and dislikes. Ask for input and take the advice. Ask for directions.

Do give out positive energy, it will come back tenfold.

Do worry less, stress less and have faith. Have faith that you are on the right path. Go with your gut instinct. Follow your heart. Close your eyes and take a breath.

Do give someone a hug, it’s ok to show emotions.

Do say something nice to someone and watch the smile spread across their face and warm your heart as well. Be a unifier, be an enabler, be a human, and be a woman. That you will never regret.

Why is International Women’s Day Still Needed?

LeslieGrossmanLeadership2By Leslie Grossman, Chair, Vistage International

On this year’s International Women’s Day, Tuesday, March 8th, we reflect on the fact that study upon study proves that when women are present in corporate and government leadership, there is more collaboration and economic growth; yet progress is slow. Nevertheless, some believe that women should not be singled out with their own day.

The World Economic Forum conducts research annually measuring the gender gap country by country in education, healthcare, political representation and the economy. While the gender gap is narrowing in some countries, in others it is widening. In the Nordic countries the gender gap has closed more than 80% and these countries rank in the top 5 with Iceland #1. Moving up quickly are Nicaragua, Rwanda, Ireland and Belgium at 6th – 10th place. The U.S. is 20th, Brazil is #71, China is #87 and Japan is #104 .

International Women's DayWhile 57% of those enrolled in U.S. college and grad schools are women (according to Federal numbers), the number of women leaders in senior level positions in the U.S. pale. With 45 % of women in the pipeline in 2015 only 17 % are in the C-suite, according to a recent study by McKinsey and LeanIn.org . According to the study, women are still underrepresented at every level. The reasons are complex, but they are not due to women’s capabilities. They are partially due to companies’ practices and cultures. Many women believe there are less opportunities for them. Others say women have less of an appetite for senior roles to better balance work with family. The study reports that women also say stress/pressure is another obstacle. With the role at home still falling more on women, they are at a disadvantage, often unwilling to take on opportunities requiring more travel and longer hours.

A key area impacting women’s promotion potential is their network. Either they have none or they participate in less significant ones. This is one reason I encourage women to build stronger networks with more influential leaders both inside and outside their organization. Women must take a proactive approach to building trusted relationships will leaders who will, guide, support and sponsor them. It is also critical women have a vision for their own careers and not just take any position that is offered. When a woman has a vision for her career and she shares it she can get the benefit of insight and advice on how best to navigate the corporation to reach the position for which she aspires.

Considering all of this, is International Women’s Day needed? The answer is a resounding ‘yes’. It serves to remind us that change still needs to be made to utilize the talents and skills of half the world’s population. Women are key collaborators, peacemakers and nurturers. Men and women need to be reminded of the many contributions women make and discuss how to continue to move women leaders up globally to more leadership positions. International Women’s Day gives us the opportunity to focus on this conversation and take action.

Women in STEM, Where We Started and Where We Are Today

Celebrating the Trailblazers of International Women's Day By Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle, CEO and co-founder, Ixcela

50 years ago, few women pursued degrees and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The challenges these women faced were complex and ranged from general gender bias to a widespread belief from male counterparts regarding their ability to “handle” both the content and the stamina to pursue academic and industry jobs. The glass ceiling was ever prevalent as a reminder of one’s “limitations.” However, despite these challenges, many still succeeded in breaking through because of their drive and perseverance; a willingness to push back against stereotypes and societally imposed barriers. We find these women in positions of leadership today who speak of their hardships. They are our trailblazers. We celebrate them on International Women’s Day!

In the last several decades, opportunities for women have definitely increased and improved. They could (of course) always be better, but progress is being made in leaps and bounds. When one Googles “Women in STEM” countless articles, blogs and websites appear celebrating the accomplishments of women in (to name a few areas) Engineering, Medicine, Technology, Education, Chemistry, Physics, Science Research, Zoology, and Marine Biology. The accomplishments of women are being recognized and celebrated at noteworthy awards ceremonies worldwide. It is no longer uncommon to see NASA Astronaut and woman in the same sentence. Employers have started making work schedules more flexible for women (and also men) who have family commitments. For those of us who were educated in the last 20-30 years, we have taken up the baton from our pioneering counterparts to help move the bar forward, showing the next generation of youth that they CAN successfully pursue degrees in STEM. We celebrate ourselves and our fellow colleagues on International Women’s Day!

As we look forward, we must continue to push young women in STEM, but it is time to shift our approach.  We can do this through the use of female role models, which are plentiful, and by embracing statistics that show the significant inroads women are making in STEM careers.  We can treat our youth in a gender-neutral fashion in STEM education.  We need now to present to our young women that an interest in STEM is NORMAL; that interest in STEM alone does not make you a trailblazer. To do that, you will have to discover something wonderful and new.  Just like for our male counterparts.

We are not done.  Recent statistics shed light on a worrisome problem. The United States currently ranks 20th in the world with regards to science literacy. Science has become a “politicized” issue in the USA, preventing important topics to be openly discussed with youth. Although STEM jobs are projected to grow at a rate three times as fast as non-STEM jobs, the number of students (especially women) graduating with STEM degrees is not increasing at a rate able to keep up with the projected need.  Fixing this issue is key to long-term national competitiveness.  Time is short.

International Women’s Day is thus a celebration of the women of our past, the women of our present, and the young women who represent our future.

What Will Be Your Organization’s Authentic Purpose in 2021?

Carole Cone On Purpose, Founder & CEO

Authenticity means showing up and standing up for your values, beliefs, and commitments. This is particularly true–and necessary–in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This International Women’s Day, we’re looking at brands that are walking the talk and putting their stakeholders–from employees to communities–first. Case in point: Mars Inc.’s Be Heard campaign, which empowers women to have a voice, and then ensure they’re heard so that true, sustainable change can happen. To learn more about what it means to be an authentic brand, read this essay by purpose pioneer Carol Cone.

The power of authentic purpose comes from integrating it into an organization such that it generates shared value for all stakeholders. Here are my suggestions for organizations to define and integrate a truly authentic, activated purpose.

Purpose is now considered a core business strategy practiced by B2C and B2B companies around the world. How it empowers and powers organizations to embrace extraordinary new stakeholder responsibilities is profound when developed, embedded and activated authentically.

Authentic purpose equals thoughtful, real and sustained actions that impact the business internally and externally, while having a positive impact on society. And the organizations with the most authentic purpose have it baked into their cultures, mandated and modeled by CEOs who understand their leadership role.

Why is this more important than ever?

COVID-19 accelerated the adoption and integration of purpose, according to a recent Accenture report: “Winners will combine the sprint on their COVID-19 responses with the marathon of longer-term societal and economic impact. Losers will be, at best, forced to rebuild their brands, values and reputation from the ground up. Or at worse, they will simply disappear.”

Accenture says companies that define purpose thoughtfully become a “living business — one that can sustain growth through hyper-relevance” while addressing customer needs.

The stakes are high — really high. Do purpose right and organizations can become magnets for talent and shift to the fast track for growth. Purpose that is lived authentically in an organization ignites employee potential; helps companies push beyond boundaries; inspires new products, services and lines of business; sparks innovative collaborations; and deepens supply chain, customer, and consumer relationships.Unilever, through its decade-plus commitment to the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP), is the most desired consumer products employer in 50 countries. Because the USLP is authentic, strategic and deeply integrated throughout the business, Unilever’s 28 Sustainable Living Brands grew 69 percent faster than those without purpose at their core and delivered 75 percent of the company’s overall turnover in 2019.

Recent research backs this up: 65 percent of consumers want businesses to take a stand on issues important to them, and that rate rises to 74 percent among 18- to 39-year-olds. 47 percent of consumers expect brands to translate values and promises into new and innovative products and services. In terms of social issues, when companies don’t act with speed and sincerity, 43 percent of consumers will leave that brand.

What drives an authentic social purpose?

“What people think-say-do should be aligned,” former Unilever CEO Paul Polman said in a Greenbiz webcast. Purpose-driven companies and leaders, Polman said, should “create value through values. Set targets that are hard to reach. Move from a circular economy to a regenerative economy. Lead as a CEO to fight for what is right. Put self into the service of others.

“CEOs today have a knowledge gap and a courage gap. They don’t know all. They need to ask for help. Be human and show vulnerability.” Do that, Polman says, and people will want to work for you.

Unilever recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the USLP, sharing insights into its purpose journey, noting both victories and misses for its brands — again demonstrating the organization’s humility and humanity — while underscoring that purpose is a journey, not a destination.

The power of authentic purpose comes from integrating it into an organization such that it generates shared value for all stakeholders. Where an organization is on this journey will have an even greater impact in 2021. Here are my suggestions for organizations to define and integrate a truly authentic, activated purpose.

1. Set up purpose to serve as a navigation system for culture

Culture influences everything: employee value proposition, risk and compliance, retention (especially for Millennials, who care deeply about purpose in their work), employee productivity, customer and supply chain relations, brand differentiation, organic growth and more.

Yet, Gallup found that only 41 percent of employees  know what their company stands for and what makes it different from competitors.

Culture begins with an organization’s purpose, but it’s expressed by leaders’ behavior. That’s why purpose is increasingly used as a “north star” for making tough decisions: An organization’s real values come to light under pressure. How leaders behave in challenging times — COVID-19 being perhaps the greatest event of the last century — demonstrates whether the organization’s purpose is real. It also indicates what must change to create the culture that’s desired.

Because intangible assets such as culture average 52 percent of an organization’s market value (and in some sectors as much as 90 percent), it’s important that purpose is led by CEOs, says Cyrus Taraporevala, President and CEO of State Street Global Advisors. This includes making clear, purpose-driven actions; as well as communicating internally and externally about the role and importance of purpose.

By connecting people with a sense of higher purpose, leaders can inspire them to bring more energy and creativity to their jobs. They take more risks, learn more and raise their game.

Here’s how some leaders express and shape their purpose cultures:

AB InBev: To provide clarity for its 175,000 employees across 500 brands in 100 countries, AB InBev has a clearly stated Manifesto:

We are a company of owners. We believe that you get out what you put in. We strive to be the best pursuing our dream, committed to improving lives for more people in more communities. For centuries, we’ve been bringing people together through sports, through music, and through culture, creating moments, both everyday and extraordinary moments, seizing every occasion to serve up more of what people thirst for.

For this reason, we pour ourselves into our work from farm, to brewery, to market, taking pride and ownership in every step, crafting great beer from the best natural ingredients, paving the road for a better tomorrow that we’re proud to be part of and celebrating the great times that bring us together. We are AB InBev, bringing people together for a better world.”

AB InBev’s purpose, “Bringing people together for a better world,” links to a roadmap of 10 principles that mold the company’s culture. “It really defines not only who we are and how we act, it unifies the company’s 500 brands and drives all of our people,” said Pablo Jimenez, former CCO of AB InBev.

Mars Inc.’s purpose, “The world we want tomorrow begins with how we do business today,” is a simple but profound statement that opens the lens of possibility for Mars’ new businesses and products. It also guided the company’s rapid response to COVID-19. Mars’ purpose is guided by the Five Principles of Mars: (Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency, and Freedom), the organization’s roadmap for decision-making and guide to beliefs and actions for their 125,000 associates. The Five Principles were powerful for Mars during COVID, as the company had to make significant financial decisions. To which, leadership asked: “How does this contribute to the world we want tomorrow?” Mars embeds its purpose within the organization through frequent communications, dynamic discussions, applying purpose as a lens for decision-making, and incorporating purpose KPIs into performance reviews for senior management and the company’s top 300 leaders.

Procter & Gamble seeks clarity about who the “hero” is to develop its purpose-led brands. “It is not the brand or the company. For P&G, it’s the consumers whose lives we can make better,” said CCO Damon Jones. This approach allows P&G to think about its value proposition in a very different way.

2. CEOs must have courage and embrace servant leadership

CEOs bring their commitments to life via servant leadership — constantly living their organization’s purpose.

Starbucks is an extraordinary best-practice case study of how to embed purpose into culture. “How can I ask my partners [employees] to support Starbucks, if I don’t support them?” said former CEO Howard Schultz. Benefits for partners range from “bean stock” to comprehensive health coverage and a free online college education. In response to the pandemic, Starbucks supplemented this with 20 hours of mental health coverage.

“Authentic leaders also know their blind spots. They know when to find others to help,” Jones said.

Purpose-driven companies recognize they cannot be divorced from their community and the responsibility to be part of society. “When you are part of the community, you’re expected to be part of the solution,” says Jimenez. “So that’s why, by being part of communities and by realizing that our mission is to bring people together, we came up with different ways and forms to land this — whether by sustainability efforts, by our smart drinking goals, by our efforts concerning road safety.”

Action must be modeled by C-suite leaders. “Authentic leaders know their blind spots. They know when to find others to help,” Jones says.

3. Understand that the process to develop purpose takes time and must be across levels

When Paul Polman started the process to reinvent Unilever, he led 400 senior leaders through comprehensive training to identify their personal purpose. Only in doing this could Polman set the groundwork for his visionary transformation of the company. As the company neared the 10th anniversary of the USLP, thousands of employees went through a similar discovery process to find their personal purpose — designed to engage them in the next 10 years of the Plan.

Mars, a family-owned company, spent two years with senior leaders to develop a purpose based on the organization’s decades-old Five Principles.

AB InBev took months of analysis to develop its purpose, including employees from regions where the company operates, and colleagues from different levels and departments. Feedback and insights were gathered via focus groups, surveys and the thoughtful reflection of conversations with senior management.

4. Take the long view and set stretch goals

Companies with an authentic purpose take the long view. AB InBev states this clearly in its purpose: “Bringing people together for a better world, for the next 100 years.”

Mars views its purpose in terms of generations, not quarters. “Following our collectively developed purpose ensures we stay family-owned for the long term,” said Andy Pharoah, Mars’ VP Corporate Affairs and Sustainability.

In the early years of his Unilever leadership, Polman took the courageous move to stop providing quarterly guidance to the financial markets. He said pointedly without giving that expected guidance, “If you don’t want to invest in my stock, then don’t.”

To shape and deliver on an authentic purpose, set stretch goals that seem almost impossible to achieve. “It takes the same amount of effort to dream small or to dream big; but we want to dream big, of course,” said Carlos Brito, AB InBev’s CEO.

Unilever wanted to be ambitious as it structured its purpose — “Making Sustainable Living Commonplace” — and the USLP. “If we set up really ambitious objectives, it would stretch people to think and act in a completely different way. Not incrementally,” said Karen Hamilton, Unilever’s Global VP of Sustainability, Divisions. “The goals were ambitious to drive transformational change at scale: improving the health and wellbeing of 1 billion lives; halving their environmental footprint; or enhancing the livelihoods of 100 million people. They required us to go well outside our comfort zone,” she said.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)’ purpose is “to make it a joy for all stakeholders to work with us.” To ensure purpose is authentic, “you have to bring the same vigor and the same capabilities that you apply to your business, problems, and how you support your customers to solve societal problems,” said Chief Social Responsibility Officer Balaji Ganapathy. To activate purpose throughout the organization, TCS applies the 4Cs: Intellectual, Technology, Human and Financial Capital.

“I think bringing the power of our technology; driving it by embedding it into the company’s purpose; and leveraging the skills and expertise of employees, as well as leaders in the larger community, is where the opportunity lies for us to make significant change in society,” Ganapathy said. “Purpose is the new technology, symbolizing that today and even more so tomorrow, when integrated into the core of the business, purpose can create significant shared value for all stakeholders, thus forming a new type of capitalism.”

5. Engage employees as your growth engine

Cultures with a well-defined purpose attract and keep top talent, as well as engage workers more deeply. Engaged workers perform better, and so do their companies.

AB InBev employees know their role because the organization’s manifesto is actively lived by the CEO down to employees at each brewery around the world. The global brewing giant’s employees are treated as if they are owners, and thus take the company’s results personally. Employees care and act because their culture and purpose make them feel it is their company. As owners, they identify gaps and areas that need improvement, and then develop solutions. This purpose-driven culture creates an environment where people are never completely satisfied with their results, so they are in a never-ending process of continuous improvement.

“Having this clear culture, clear purpose, the simple principles — and then living them and breathing them — has helped our company exponentially grow, as well as bond your people together into just loving the company overall and their individual brands,“ Jimenez says.

At TCS, purpose is built into each employee’s career plan, helping them discover and live their personal purpose by connecting it with the company’s values. During their three-month orientation period, TCS employees are paired with a nonprofit as their first client. Employees are also paired with seasoned mentors and an agile learning model to produce an early “win” for the relationship.

“This approach creates an understanding that, not only can they earn money by doing this job, they can fulfill something that is more innate and inherent,” Ganapathy says. “And this has been a wild success for us in terms of retention — making us one of the leading companies in the industry in terms of retention, with annualized global rates of 87-88 percent.”

Ganapathy talks about a sophisticated approach to move employees from participants to custodians. TCS has carefully architected a journey for their employees to move from volunteers to mentors to societal champions, which encourages deep ownership of partner relationships and outcomes. That approach garners an astonishing 97 percent approval of the company’s community engagement and realizes 85 percent participation of business leaders in community engagement across 100 business units. Employees can take diverse actions: joining a nonprofit board, spearheading a pro-bono project, leading a month of community service, or helping to create online platforms providing technology solutions for community partners.

“You need to enable your workforce to fulfill their broader purpose that goes far beyond volunteering,” Ganapathy said. “It is about driving a culture. So, if you’re doing the first step right — which is embedding purpose — you will have more meaningful opportunities to share and connect that to what people are doing on a daily basis in their job, and extending that to the work that they can do to support for the community.”

6. Commit to real action, both internal and external

What is the role of an authentic company today in social issues? COVID-19 and the movement for racial equity pulled back the curtain on companies and brands who said they were purpose-driven. While millions of dollars were donated to deserving nonprofits, actions spoke even louder. Companies with an authentic purpose acted swiftly and decisively.

Procter & Gamble’s path to purpose for each brand involves discussing the strategy for the business, then uncovering a core consumer insight to deepen that brand’s authentic connection to people that leads to their societal involvement. “Know where you have the right to play,” Jones said. Insights are uncovered from traditional consumer research, social listening, as well as engagement with stakeholders ranging from supply chain partners to NGOs. P&G also consults with potential “adversaries” to illuminate weaknesses and opportunities.

P&G’s COVID-19 response was rapid. More than 30 brands immediately took actions, without corporate guidance, in countries around the world. Responses included modifying factories to manufacture PPE or hand sanitizer. The company’s local impact was accelerated thanks to years-long relationships with more than 200 community organizations. “We also had our set of principles that had been developed from our values,” Jones said. “This enabled our people at the front lines to act. The principles helped them with clarity of decision-making authority so people could act swiftly.”

As one of the world’s largest advertisers, P&G recognizes its power to impact society through messaging that incorporates consumer insights. This includes supporting confidence and gender equity in women via the Always and Secret brands, or taking a stand on equality and systemic racism. In 2017, the company began addressing racism in its advertising with short films including ”The Talk” and “The Look.” These emotional and provocative videos were designed to strike a cultural nerve and drive disruptive action. And this was just a portion of P&G’s activation strategy.

Beyond using its advertising clout, P&G looked to its network of suppliers, partners and agencies to activate the company’s “force for good, force for growth” mantra in new ways; and advance gender and race equity issues. P&G created new policies around diversity in its advertising — from talent to the teams behind creative work. A fascinating and unexpected result: P&G found that some of its best-performing ads were directed by women. “At the end of the day, we want a more equal world — equal voices, equal opportunity, equal representation,” Jones said.

Clarity of outcome is also critical: “Getting people to engage is the goal of ‘The Talk,’ ‘The Look,’ ‘The Choice,’” Jones said. “Yet, they don’t have to agree.”

A commitment to what I call ‘’story living” versus storytelling means an authentic purpose has to become a fundamental part of a company or brand’s DNA. “P&G had done this work for so long addressing race and gender that it gives them the right to talk about it — not because we’re perfect, but because we’re making progress,” Jones said.

AB InBev lives its purpose through bold sustainability commitments. As beer is brewed with natural ingredients, AB InBev depends on a healthy environment. The iconic Budweiser brand has committed to 100 percent renewable energy throughout its manufacturing process, and boldly prints that goal on its cans. This is a really big deal: 41 million Buds are consumed daily around the globe. “When you’re part of the community, you’re expected to be part of the solution,” Jimenez says.

7. Use purpose to ignite innovation

AB InBev’s goals were too ambitious for the organization to achieve alone, so the holding company launched the 100+ Accelerator. Through this program, AB InBev helps the next generation of innovators develop ideas to solve the world’s biggest environmental challenges. One is an equity investment in BanQu to provide financial identities to farmers in developing countries, where many do not have access to a traditional banking system. Another innovation investment is RSU Brazil — a social enterprise with the mission to take waste from landfills and transform it into clean energy, creating quality biomass from waste.

3M also built an accelerator process into decades of its operations. The company provides employees with 15 percent of their time to tinker. This commitment has been extended through an internal Tech Forum of 10,000 3M engineers, who invent new products and solutions on an ongoing basis. The company has taken this further with a stunning declaration called the Sustainability Value Commitment, whereby every new product will have a form of sustainability built in. Imagine the impact, as 3M develops around 1,000 new products every year.

Mars built an accelerator into its business goals to activate its overall purpose: “The world we want tomorrow starts with how we do business today.” Its pet food business built off the purpose, announcing a competition “to become a partner of choice for everyone willing to change the rules of the game in pet care.” Pet care is now the largest division for Mars, from food to veterinary services.

8. Partnerships are essential to drive change at scale

“Purpose is only real when you treat it as a business priority with the same discipline as you would with any aspect,” Pharoah says. “And to scale, you need to have partnerships. You cannot do them yourself, and no one has a monopoly on good ideas. It has to be about creating a greater good, not just trying to position yourself to gain competitive advantage.”

Companies with an authentic purpose seek partners for various reasons. Some seek to address large systemic challenges — such as sourcing sustainable ingredients to influence farming practices — and in turn, hundreds of brands and their products. Unilever co-created the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil to reinvent industry norms for sourcing the ingredient. Unilever also partnered with UN Women to develop a global framework to drive safety for millions of women in rural spaces.

Focusing on business capabilities is another means to enliven partnerships. TCS has been the title sponsor of the TCS New York City Marathon since 2013. Through the company’s partnership with New York Road Runners, TCS has made the largest marathon in the world into the most tech-enabled event of its kind — providing an enhanced experience to runners and onlookers alike. Expanding the event’s reach, the company works with youth groups to support the larger cause of health and fitness. To integrate the Marathon into the classroom, TCS invites 50 teachers from across the country to race, integrating their experience into the classroom with computer science and digital innovation experiences.

When creating a more responsible business model that reflects the needs of society, partnerships are key to drive transformational scale with authenticity. “Problems are so big and so complex that no one can really tackle them alone,” Jimenez says. “But we do believe that by doing this with partners in a thoughtful way, we can really make a difference and have a longstanding impact that we can later replicate, based on evidence.”

9. Accountability and transparency are expected by all stakeholders

At a senior level, accountability is part of AB InBev’s KPIs, as well as part of the annual operating plans for business units and leaders. At a more junior level, employees have varied elective opportunities to practice accountability.

Mars’ sustainability goals are part of the KPIs of their CEO and EVP Global Supply Chain. This reinforces the importance of C-suite leadership and example-setting in activating purpose.

Setting stretch goals was a critical component of the USLP, which provided a strong framework for action, coupled with clear goals and metrics. “We were doing really well in things like reducing emissions from manufacturing,” said Sarah McDonald, Sustainability Director for Unilever Beauty and Personal Care. “But doing really badly in helping consumers reduce emissions. Trying to persuade people to change their habits has been incredibly difficult.”

The marketplace has spoken about the characteristics of top-performing CEOs: ranking #1 most important is a CEO’s positive contributions to society, according to recent research by Morning Consult. The study found the drivers of CEO reputation and performance have dramatically changed from earning public trust, fairness, integrity, credibility and being a role model to drivers related to purpose.

Yes, we’re living in tough times. An authentic purpose, actively lived, can be a beacon in a world of disruption. Don’t just state your purpose. Live it by following the guideposts above and these core principles:

1. Listen and observe every day. Be sensitive to the signals coming from stakeholders.

2. Embrace employees. They are looking for support and counting on leadership for truth.

3. Be accountable. Make commitments and report on progress.

4. Live your values, daily.

Welcome to 2021. Authentically live your purpose to make it your new normal and your engine for growth.

Women Launch Campaign for Gender Parity in Investing

CommPRO Editorial Staff

Research shows that gender diverse teams significantly outperform – but women are still highly underrepresented in the number of fund managers. PEWIN #HerWorth challenge hopes to change that.

In managing their wealth, women are looking for investments that align with their values.  However, many women are finding that they don’t have any female-led funds in their investment portfolios.

Women Launch Campaign for Gender Parity in Investing

“I retired this year and asked my financial advisor how much of my portfolio was managed by women.  His answer was zero.  I felt a call to action,” said Kim Jordan, recently retired senior R&D executive at Procter & Gamble.

By simply asking the question, Kelly Williams and Kate Mitchell, co-CEOs of the Private Equity Women Investor Network (PEWIN), hope its newly announced initiative will highlight to allocators that investors care about gender parity – and that it will spur investment in female-led funds and have a trickle-down effect into venture capital and private equity, female founded companies, public boards and even politics.

According to Morningstar, nine out of ten fund managers are male.

Private Equity Women Investor Network (PEWIN) is hoping to change that by launching a new campaign similar to the #IceBucketChallenge, #TimesUp and #MeToo.

The campaign is called #HerWorth.

The #HerWorth challenge is simple: Participants ask their financial advisor, “What percentage of my portfolio is managed by female fund managers?” – and post their results online with the hashtag #HerWorth.  Then they challenge three others to do the same.

“The goal is to raise awareness among retirees and investors like Kim Jordan – and to highlight to large institutions that investors like Kim – their clients – care about this issue,” said Elizabeth Edwards, member of PEWIN and Managing Partner of H Venture Partners, a consumer venture fund.

Participants can point their financial advisor to female fund managers some of which are listed at 100 Women in Finance, PEWIN and All Raise among other sources or ask, “What female-led funds can I invest in, specifically funds like private equity, venture capital, real estate, hedge funds, and mutual funds?”

Women will control two-thirds of the wealth over the next 10 years,” Williams said.  “If we want to see gender parity in the investment community, as well as other parts of society, we have the opportunity to use our investment portfolios to demand the expansion of the market.”

According to joint research by Pitchbook and All Raise, 87% of venture dollars are controlled by men and only 14% of venture dollars were invested in female founders.  These statistics have budged only slightly over the last 20 years, and groups like All Raise and VentureForward hope to change that.

“The data is clear that it is not just good but smart to build diverse investing and management teams,” says PEWIN Co-CEO, Kate Mitchell.

The #HerWorth challenge costs nothing and may even improve investment outcomes.  The International Finance Corporation did a study of over 800 funds and found gender balanced private capital teams outperformed the 70% of firms with all-male leaders by 10-20%.  A study by First Round Capital found that companies with a female founder performed 63% better than their investments with all-male founding teams.

Large investors globally are also focused on the diversity of fund managers. The Institutional Limited Partner Association (ILPA) has taken the step of adding diversity to its due diligence guidelines and sharing what it sees as best inclusion and diversity practices among fund managers.

The #HerWorth Campaign was announced today, International Women’s Day, during the #IWD2020 #EachforEqual campaign and will launch with global partner organizations on Aug.18, 2020, 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which finally guaranteed women’s right to vote in the United States.

“It took women 144 years from the Declaration of Independence to get the right to vote,” Edwards said. “It’s time they have the right to invest.  It’s time to vote with our wallets.”
