Hurricane Sandy Doesn’t Blow In Many Emails Chief Marketer Hurricane Sandy is blowing a lot of leaves and tree limbs around but one thing the winds haven’t swept my way is many opportunistic emails. It’s a fine line marketers walk here. Sure, you want to be sensitive to your audience’s situation and realize that they may very well have more serious things to think about than shopping online. But…..let’s be honest. The temptation must be there. If your customers are home from work or school and they still have power, they’re probably puttering around online, so why not offer them a deal or two? The marketers in my inbox restrained themselves from using the storm as a way to connect with consumers. The lone exception was the American Red Cross, which sent a very straightforward (and appropriate) “Mobilizing for Sandy” email just after 1 a.m. eastern, offering information about storm preparations, a plug for the organization’s hurricane app and an appeal for the disaster relief fund.

American Apparel used email marketing to reach out to their customers for a Hurricane Sandy sale. The email blast was offering 20 percent off for the next 36 hours “In case you’re bored during the storm.” Well, Twitter users are raving how insensitive the email blast was. However, Ryan Holiday succeeded in this email marketing campaign because everyone is talking about it. It may not have been a positive campaign, but people are responding, sharing and writing about this ad all over the Internet.

Markets Reopening Today; Lack of Backup Criticized Lincoln Journal Star The reputation of the New York Stock Exchange will suffer after it failed to have a back-up facility to deal with Hurricane Sandy, Arthur Levitt, former chairman of the Securities & Exchange Commission, said Tuesday. The exchange said in a statement Tuesday that its building and trading floor are fully operational and would reopen Wednesday. NYSE Euronext closed markets across every asset class Monday and Tuesday, the first consecutive days closed because of weather since 1888, as the storm barreled into New York City. Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. also shut down, but will reopen Wednesday. “People look to the New York Stock Exchange as being the symbol of American capitalism, and to see the exchange go down for two days without an adequate back-up plan is very, very unfortunate,” Levitt said on a Bloomberg Radio interview.

What Do Advisers Know That Institutional Investors Don’t? Investment News Institutional investor confidence is now officially in the tank, according to a report out today. Confidence among financial advisers, however, ticked up slightly in October. The Global Investor Confidence Index in October, as calculated by State Street Corp.’s investment research and trading unit, has hit it lowest point since the index was created in 1998. The current reading is also 1.5 points below the previous low set in October 2008 as the financial crisis was just beginning.

FEMA Recommended Twitter to Communicate About Hurricane The Hill’s Congress Blog The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on Monday recommended people caught in the path of Hurricane Sandy use social media to communicate in the event that the storm compromises other means of communication. FEMA was not the only agency dedicating its Twitter account to crisis communications on Monday. The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) set up a “bipartisan list of East Coast governors on Twitter” to help get the latest advice and warnings out to people in the path of the storm. Federal offices in Washington, D.C., are closed on Monday — although the Supreme Court is still hearing arguments, Forbes noted — which means that many members of Congress were pointing Twitter followers to alternative contact information for district offices.

Media, Advertisers Ready for Audience Surge From Sandy Huffington Post Sometimes it’s not the size of the storm, it’s where it hits. As Hurricane Sandy raged through one of the country’s most densely populated regions, it created a surge in online traffic Monday as people sought weather-related news and various forms of online entertainment. One of the biggest beneficiaries of the brisk online traffic was The Weather Channel, which began streaming its television feed live on YouTube and on its own website late Sunday night. On Monday, the channel’s website had its biggest day ever, serving up 200 million page views as of 7 p.m. Eastern. “It’s like our mini Super Bowl,” said Curt Hecht, the chief global revenue officer for channel owner The Weather Co.

Advertising for State Races Are ‘PAC’-king In Southwest News Herald Independent expenditures in state legislative races are closing in on the $2 million mark since July 1, with most of that spending coming in the month of October, Illinois State Board of Elections records show. Last March, a federal judge struck down Illinois’ law capping contributions to so-called state super PACs. Since then, according to the State Board of Elections’ Web site, $1.8 million has been spent by groups on Illinois campaigns, and as of late last week, $1.3 million of that has been spent in the month of October alone. Super PAC money is expected to increase exponentially in 2014, when gubernatorial and other statewide candidates are up for bid. So far, just 11 independent expenditure committees have been formed, but more will surely be formed after this cycle ends.
