Dial ‘M’ for Peppercomm (A Rebranding Adventure)
Integrated Marketing…By Jacqueline Kolek, Partner & Senior Director, Peppercomm
On October 1, 2012 Peppercom made a small change with big meaning. We rebranded the firm to Peppercomm and launched a new tagline and website. The process took us much longer than planned, partly because client work consistently took priority and partly because our initial attempts were too complicated. After several iterations, we had what we like think was a simple stroke of genius. Adding one letter communicated who we are, how we work and solved a challenge we’ve faced for 17 years.

Book About Gartner Magic Quadrant Rights Many Wrongs
Public Relations…By Victor Cruz, Principal, MediaPR.net
Neither the local library nor the home book shelf is overstuffed with books like this. From an insider comes a reverse whistle-blower. I say reverse because the author of “UP and to the RIGHT” offers a corrective to something that has long been perceived negatively and oft debated by PR and marketing pros: Is the Magic Quadrant bogus? In Richard Stiennon’s new book, the author seeks to pull off the covers on the much lionized and also much maligned Gartner Magic Quadrant.

Looking for PR Jobs Overseas? Culturally Correct Resumes for Communicators
The Hiring Hub…By Marie Raperto, President, CIM Search
If the Olympics have done nothing else, they have highlighted cultural differences and the lure of overseas travel. So, if you have the urge to work in another country, the first item you must master is the CV or curriculum vitae. Your US-focused resume will not get you work in another country. While a resume talks about what you have done in your career and where you did it, your CV will tell employers who you are, where you have come from and whether you are qualified. It is very important that you avoid any cultural or lingual errors.

Content Marketing: How-to Balance Substance with Attention & Create Appealing Content
By Sarah Skerik, Vice President-Social Media, PR Newswire for the Agile Engagement Channel
I’ve long thought that the discipline of search engine optimization (namely, the art and science of getting your web site positioned high in search engine results for specific keywords) offers great lessons for PR and content marketers. A blog post on SEOMoz today titled “What Kind of Content Gets Links in 2012?” offers an unusually rich trove of data and ideas for communicators to consider, and it got me thinking about different the different types of visibility our content generates.

R.I.P. Traditional Marketing
Huffington Post
If your SEO isn’t talking to your PR isn’t talking to your social media, you are losing out on customers. If a PR professional had jumped into a time machine in 2008 and landed in 2012, they would find themselves lost and unemployable. That’s because the way customers interact with organisations has changed beyond recognition and the traditional marketing communications model is now all but redundant. Print advertising no longer works. Cold calling is a bore. And an article in the papers doesn’t have the effect on a business’s sales figures that it once did. As traditional marketing rapidly became outmoded we’ve seen organisations scrambling to exploit the enormous opportunities to reach customers through their browsers. Yet the vast majority of businesses are not even close to achieving their potential in terms of online marketing.

Live @Ad Week: The Influence of Social on Brands
Adotas
Influence is an integral part of all media. The Advertising Week discussion, “Earned Media: If it’s truly earned, then how do you buy it?” (part of the two-hour summit, “Under The Influence: The Convergence of Media and Influence”), explored the added brand lift of earned media over paid media, and how both are inherently integral to a cohesive ad campaign. Earned media refers to the favorable publicity gained through promotional efforts beyond paid advertising, via social sharing for a more long-term impact beyond the traditional ad buy. Data shows that the top apps users are likely to share the brands that they like most with their friends, and broadcast results for pick-your-favorites, quizzes and trivia.

PR Fix for J.P. Morgan Suit?: Lack of New News
New York Times
The lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman against J.P. Morgan for flawed mortgage-backed securities issued by Bear Stearns arrives a bit late in the game. It is the first case to emerge from the Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities Working Group, led by Mr. Schneiderman, which was formed in January. Yet it contains little new information about how Wall Street bundled together several poorly underwritten subprime mortgages and sold them to investors on the promise that they were safe investments. And as a civil case, it may result in a finding of a violation, but that would come only after years of discovery and legal maneuvering.

Marketers Reach Men Through Mobile, Movies, Study Reveals
Media Post
According to a new study by the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence and mobile advertising company InMobi, the mobile channel is particularly effective when it comes to reaching moviegoers, particularly the highly coveted male contingent of them. According to the study, men were much more likely to view trailers on their phones than women (41% vs. 27%), were slightly more likely to use their mobile device to helping them pick a movie (71% vs. 69%) and were slightly more likely to check social media to see what friends thought of a movie (38% vs. 33%).

Mobile Takes Center Stage at Advertising Week 2012
Huffington Post
If the programming during Advertising Week 2012 is any indication of what is important to marketers today, then mobile marketing is certainly top of mind. With not one, but three full days of events dedicated to mobile marketing and advertising, marketers are certainly going to hear a lot about mobile this week. Mobile marketing is no longer a question of “if” but of “how.” After an industry realignment in 2009-11, this year has been about setting the stage for significant growth. A key factor pushing mobile advertising toward the mainstream is that mobile web access is fast becoming more the norm than the exception. With roughly half the U.S. population using smartphones today, mobile advertising is accelerating. Marketers can best use mobile …

Investors Beware: Avoid Companies With Google’s Share Structure
The Wall Street Journal
Not every company can be like Google GOOG -0.63%, which saw its stock price soar to yet another record high last week. And not every company should, new research suggests. Stocks with Google’s type of controlled-ownership model haven’t fared as well as companies with more traditional share structures, according to a study jointly released Tuesday by the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute (IRRC) and Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). The study set out to examine the pros and cons of controlled companies — defined here as one in which a single person or group owns 30% or more of the voting power. While proponents have argued that controlled ownership helps protect a company from outside pressure to meet short-term demands, the findings indicate this view is oversimplified, says Jon Lukomnik, an executive director at IRRC.

US Muni Board Eyes Protections for Retail Investors
Reuters
The Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board said on Tuesday it tweaked its proposal aimed at ensuring that individual investors have a shot at fairly priced U.S. municipal bond debt during retail order periods. The board, which writes the rules for the $3.7 trillion muni market enforced by the Securities and Exchange Commission, said it opened a comment period until Nov. 2 on revised amendments designed to ensure that bond dealers adhere to issuers’ directives and engage in “fair pricing practices for retail investors.” The changes, first proposed in March, would require underwriters to follow an issuer’s definition of who qualifies as an individual investor during retail order periods that precede formal pricings of bond deals and to provide detailed information on retail orders that are placed.

Honda Does Better at Corporate Governance
Seeking Alpha
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (HMC) just expanded its earlier recall of Acura TL cars that have potential power steering problems to include Accords. This development is the latest example of how the Tokyo car maker has been openly and honestly improving its corporate governance, ranging from revamping its supervision of senior management to disclosing information to global investors. While having to recall a product can be an indication of quality concerns, Honda seems to be taking responsibility and acting proactively to address its problems. In earlier years it had recalled Acura TLs, warning that if the power steering hoses in the cars were exposed to prolonged high temperatures they could crack and leak, potentially causing a fire, according to a filing with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Money the Key to Employee Happiness, Poll Says
Atlanta Business Chronicle
Want loyalty and focus from your employees? Money and recognition still talk. Atlanta-based Randstad U.S.’ latest Randstad Engagement Index shows American workers feel promotions or bonuses are the best ways to keep them engaged. In the poll, 36 percent of workers said bonuses and promotions are the most effective motivations. Only 27 percent said their employers actually practice these types of incentives and just 28 percent said their companies have a formal system to recognize and reward employees.

Want to Advertise on Tumblr? Probably Should Create Some Cool GIFs
Ad Age Digital Next
It’s been five months since microblogging platform Tumblr launched its first foray into paid advertising. What’s worked best for advertisers so far? The same type of content that is most popular on Tumblr: namely, images and animated GIFs — an image format that captures and displays a few seconds of movement, according to Rick Webb, Tumblr’s revenue consultant, who presented at the IAB’s MIXX conference in New York Tuesday. “Brands are taking part … in the culture that’s going on,” he said of the platform’s early advertisers. On May 2, Tumblr began letting advertisers pay for placement on Radar, the square unit on users’ dashboards that Tumblr has used for the last four years to highlight popular images and content from across the Tumblr network of 75 million blogs. Mr. Webb, who’s also a co-founder of the Barbarian Group, said Tumblr is opening up about 10% of Radar inventory to advertisers. He didn’t say how high that percentage would grow in the future. Users can like or reblog the image from their dashboard or click through to the source post.

The Digital Election: Money Flowing Online, But Not Persuasion Ads
ADWEEK
While much of the political world is focusing on tomorrow’s big debate in Denver, Advertising Week got a taste of the political discussion today at the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Mixx conference. Hosted by Talking Points Memo publisher and editor in chief, Josh Marshall, Cheryl Contee of Jack and Jill Politics, Facebook co-founder and New Republic editor in chief Chris Hughes, and Engage DC’s Patrick Ruffini talked about how the presidency will and won’t be decided by the Web. Here are a few highlights: In this social media era, voters get to participate in campaigns. Managing your message and controlling your message …

P&G, Walmart, Coke and 30 Other Huge Advertisers Just Humiliated Microsoft
Business Insider
The chief marketing officers of Procter & Gamble, Walmart, Ford, Verizon, Coca Cola, Unilever, General Electric, American Express, Kraft, and 30 other companies signed a letter to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, complaining about the “do not track” (DNT) function planned for Internet Explorer 10. IE10 will launch with a default DNT position, preventing consumers from being targeted by advertisers. Those advertisers spend $2.8 billion a year via Microsoft. The letter was timed to rain on Microsoft’s parade at Advertising Week, at which it launched new native ad products for Windows 8 and a redesigned MSN. It is rare for advertisers to publicly criticize the media sellers they deal with.
