By Steven Gaffney, CEO & President, Steven Gaffney Company
The foundation of all relationships is trust. When trust is lost, it functions like a sinkhole- it will take down everything else with it! In today’s environment, it seems like a lot of our typical ways of doing business and ways we’ve completed things in the past have been lost. Trust is hard to build and easy to lose.

Daily Finance
While there’s not a name for it yet, we’re sure to come up with a moniker for the shopping creep that’s pushed Black Friday into Thanksgiving Thursday. I’ll float “Presale Thursday,” if anyone is interested in picking it up. I think it captures the idea of retailers opening up to give buyers even more toy-grabbing, line-standing, and old-lady-kicking time. Also, who doesn’t love a presale? The latest name to jump on the Presale Thursday bandwagon is Macy’s . Reports coming out of Chicago suggest that some stores will be opening on Thursday night and keeping the doors open for a full 24 hours.

The honeymoon is over. More than a year after Marissa Mayer took the top job at Yahoo, the company’s revenues and profits are still down, even as Ms. Mayer continues her start-up shopping spree and rolls out Yahoo product update after another. Last quarter, the company acquired eight new start-ups, like Xobni, an e-mail service, and Bignoggins, a maker of fantasy sports mobile apps, and released 15 new product updates.

Disney issued a pro-forma release Tuesday morning urging shareholders to eschew the offer, noting that the price is $3 below the closing price of Mouse House shares on Oct. 7, the day before TRC made its offer. Green Car Reports
Every so often, stories appear about new networks of charging stations for electric cars that have just opened. But if there’s no business model to support public charging stations over the long term, who’s going to pay for that infrastructure in the future? One possibility, observers suggest, is that the cost of (carefully sited) public charging stations could be absorbed by carmakers–as a marketing expense to build consumer confidence.

An 11-point reform plan includes the creation of the Government Communications Service, which will oversee mandatory evaluation of government marketing campaigns and their spending plans. It will act as a centralised service, focusing on sharing best practice and evaluating communications through a central team created from senior government marketers. The communications strategy will be aligned with government policies. Follow-up reports on marketing campaigns will be formally shared between departments for the first time. Alex Aiken, the executive director of government communication, will lead the GCS.

Environmental Leader
We see the terms “brand” and “sustainability” mentioned together more often today than ever before. Since brands usually function as the connection between business and people, their role has evolved beyond marketing to also represent corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. But when a corporation’s sustainability commitments become unfulfilled promises, or fail to engender broader support – the future of a sustainable brand can ultimately become “unsustainable.”

Overall, I like the story, although the “real” top 50 are those that give us top pages of income tax returns, W-3s, CPA-attested head counts of full-time employees, accounts, people, etc. 17 of your top 50 are O’Dwyer-ranked firms. Eight of them are parts of conglomerates, which are not allowed to rank. It would be easy for them to do, since a main proof is payroll totals. They all have that, but beg off. They are shooting themselves in the foot because Edelman, our most enthusiastic and long-time ranker (since 1970), is now at least five times as big as the next independent.

Hidden in the Times Media Group’s recent financial statements was a decision to withdraw from the South Africa Press Association (Sapa). This will leave a substantial gap in the national news agency’s budget, putting its future in doubt. Was this decision just the cost-cutting of an asset-stripping fund manager out to profit from a quick turnaround before he exits the industry, or does it signal the passing of what has long been one of the fundamental institutions of the quotidian tasks of routine news-gathering?

Imagine a research library where most of the books are missing footnotes – where the bottom of the pages are stained or ripped out, making it impossible for scholars to tell the sources of information. That’s the state of many web pages right now, including those for the Supreme Court and The New England Journal of Medicine and Science. New York Times’ legal reporter Adam Liptak called attention to the problem in September, citing research that showed half of the links on the Supreme Court site don’t work.
