By Dan Chmielewski, Principal, Madison Alexander PR
It’s been about a week since the security breaches of popular social media sites LinkedIn and eHarmony made news (as reported in this CBS story), along with the hack of candidate Mitt Romney’s HotMail and Dropbox accounts (as reported in on InformationWeek here). And as one might expect, the PR teams at these companies (and Mr. Romney’s campaign staff) did a great job of explaining what happened, how the breach might affect users and what to do to protect one’s account.

BMW’s Branding Insights: What Munich Taught Me about Brand Promises
By Ann Revell-Pechar, Vice President, Carolinas at Arketi Group
This spring, we gave in to our son’s desire to include Munich on our European itinerary. The reasons he wanted to go were perfectly clear to me. You see, I spend a lot of time thinking about persona and brand promise. So I knew that the image of “engineering excellence” and “precision” that goes along with the German culture was something our mechanically-inclined son would relate to. It’s in everything they do, and is personified in the automobiles they make. One favorite, made in Munich, is BMW.

An Introduction to Retargeting: What Is It?
By ZOG Digital for the Digital Visibility Channel
Retargeting is a form of online advertising in which a user that has been to your website can be displayed ads from your media campaign on publishers and ad networks across the Internet. This form of advertising is very effective, since you are only showing ads to users that have been to your site (i.e. showing an interest in your product or service), instead of relying on demographic or other types of targeting to find users.

Occupy Wall Street, Workhouse Publicity Battle Over Silver Anvil PR Prize
Washington Post
Occupy Wall Street may be weakened, but the brand seems to be doing fine: The protest movement just won a prestigious PR award. Technically, the award went to Workhouse Publicity, a high-end New York firm that launched a pro-bono Occupy campaign after protestors took over Zuccotti Park last year. On Thursday, Workhouse scored the Public Relations Society of America’s Silver Anvil Award – the Oscar of the industry – for public service with an entry called “The Revolution Will Be Editorialized.” High fives all around? Not so fast. “It’s great that Occupy is being acknowledged, but Workhouse has been pretty much promoting itself while doing the work,” Dana Balicki, a member of Occupy’s press team, told us Monday. “Our success shouldn’t rely on a company that works with the one percent …

Things That Make You Go “Hmm”: ComScore Study Saying Facebook Marketing Works Was Partly Commissioned by the Social Network
Washington Post
As reported here this week, a comScore study suggests that marketing on Facebook can help increase sales. ComScore urges marketers to look beyond acquiring as many fans as possible on Facebook and focus on their message and on social media marketing campaigns. It comes as investors question just how much Facebook is worth. Its stock is down 28 percent since it began trading publicly last month. THE NEW CAVEAT? Turns out out that the report was partly commissioned by Facebook Inc., a client of comScore’s. It was based on a panel of Internet users who agreed to participate – a condition that can skew results …

Congress Pummels Wal-Mart Over Lack Of Disclosure in Bribery Case
24/7 Wall Street
Members of Congress have already tired of Wal-Mart’s tardy reactions to its requests for information about a bribery probe in Mexico started a month ago by the world’s largest retailer. It has been alleged that officials in the Wal-Mart Mexico division bribed local officials to be granted rapid approval for new stores. There are concerns that management at Wal-Mart as high as CEO Michael Duke were aware of the actions. Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings and Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman sent a letter to Duke today, in which they wrote, among other things that “you have provided us with no documents, you have declined to allow any Wal-Mart employees to brief our staffs about the allegations, and you have failed to respond to our request to speak with Maritza Munich, a key figure in the investigation.” …

Ad Forecast: Publicis Upbeat on 2013 Despite Europe Woes; Optimism Includes Olympics
Reuters
Advertising agency Publicis is optimistic about marketing budgets for next year despite the ongoing drag from Europe`s debt crisis and the lack of major events such as the Olympic Games, Chief Executive Maurice Levy said.
The veteran chief of the world`s third-biggest ad agency, which competes with WPP and Omnicom, acknowledged that Greece, Spain and Italy faced deep economic pain, but said he believed political leaders would avoid contagion infecting the entire common currency zone.
“I see 2013, for the time being, quite positively,” Levy said at the Reuters Global Technology and Media Summit.
“Our clients` plans for next year as we see them today, although not finalized, put us on course for a stronger 2013 than 2012, even without the boost from the quadrennial events including the U.S. elections and Olympics.” …

Internet Ad Revenue Hits $8.4 Billion in 1st Quarter
Ad Age Digital Next
Internet ad revenue grew to $8.4 billion in the first quarter this year, a 15% increase over the $7.3 billion booked in the same period last year, according to the latest IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report. PricewaterhouseCoopers researches and produces the report, which is sponsored by the IAB. Growth in the double-digits is a positive sign for digital-media companies, as they look to bring more offline ad dollars online. But this year’s first-quarter total marks slower growth than the industry experienced in the same quarter last year when revenue increased 24% from the $5.9 billion booked in the first quarter of 2010. A rise in spending on social platforms, online video and mobile were likely contributors to the growth last quarter. Still, rising waters do not boost all in the industry. Digital advertising for newspapers grew only 1% …
