Global public relations programs strive for consistency, efficiency and economy but relatively few achieve better than mixed results. Lions, Leopards & Life Lessons from Content Marketing World

What an amazing three days I’ve had in Columbus, Ohio for Content Marketing World 2012. Joe Pulizzi (@juntajoe) and his team deserve so much credit – from the seamless programming to the fantastic speakers to the entertainment and the lessons. I call them lessons because while I honed my knowledge on content marketing – where we’ve been, where we’re going and how we can do it better – I am walking away with some timeless, yet valuable, lessons from two of the keynotes.

CSR, Cause Marketing, Social Good or Creating Shared Value? Sustainability’s Tower Of Babel Moment
By John Elkington for CSRwire for the Corporate Social Responsibility Channel
Think of the state of the sustainability agenda and it’s hard not be reminded of one of the defining stories in western literature, that of the Tower of Babel – found early in the book of Genesis, which opens the Christian Bible. As many will recall, the narrative runs like this: after the Flood, which the Bible tells us swept the known world and drowned most people, a united mankind came together, speaking one language, to build a massive tower with its “top in the heavens”.

The Top 10 Things Mark Zuckerberg Should Talk About in His First Public Interview Since the IPO
Business Insider
Mark Zuckerberg will have his first public interview since Facebook’s IPO in May at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco. He will be speaking for almost 30 minutes starting at 2pm PST. This appearance is one of the most highly anticipated tech CEO interviews in recent history, due to the stock price’s move since the IPO and the silence by the company imposed by the “quiet period”. Tech industry pundits and tech investors will likely be glued to what he will say (or not say). With that in mind, I think these are 10 Top Issues people would like to see him address tomorrow …

More than 30 Prominent Celebrities, Sharing Personal 9/11 Stories, Join Tens of Thousands Nationwide in Pledging to Perform Good Deeds in Observance of 9/11 This Year
Sys-Con Media
Annual campaign that has transformed 9/11 into the nation’s largest day of charitable activity kicks into high gear this week with $15 million public service advertising campaign. On radio and television stations across the country, on highway billboards, and in newspapers and magazines, Americans are being introduced to a new phrase that is gradually reshaping the way they and the nation thinks about 9/11 for generations to come. I will. “I will go up to a policeman or fireman and say thank you,” a young man says in one radio ad. A young girl adds, “I will volunteer at my church.” Another woman says, “I will help plant a tree.” These are called “I wills,” personal pledges by individuals to perform a good deed on 9/11. On the campaign’s website, 911day.org, people are encouraged to share their own good deed plans (“I wills”) for 9/11. It’s all part of a prominent national public service campaign, now in its second year, urging the country to annually observe the anniversary of 9/11 as a day of doing good deeds …

The Biggest Mistakes Companies Make With Mobile Marketing, And 3 Strategies That Actually Work
Fast Company
Marketers are wasting millions of dollars by failing to apply what works in digital marketing to their mobile initiatives, says Huge CEO Aaron Shapiro. Here’s how to stop the bleeding. Two years ago, I argued that we were in the midst of an “app bubble.” Brands and venture capitalists were eagerly investing in an overcrowded marketplace that didn’t demonstrate real value to most consumers. As smartphones have made their way into the purses and pockets of more and more consumers, brands have only increased the pace of experimentation, making the challenge of breaking through in app stores even more difficult. Around 26,000 applications were submitted to the iTunes App store in each of the first seven months of 2012. But the problem most companies are facing in mobile today isn’t simply a lack of appreciation for the realities of demand in the app market. Applications, just like any digital initiative, must be grounded in clear strategies that harmonize specific business needs and user interests …

When it Comes to Earnings Potential, Major Choice Plays a Key Role
Fox Business
If you’ve just packed one (or more!) kids off to college, you’re probably still reeling from the aftershock of writing that hefty tuition check. And possibly wondering if the money’s really worth it. The short answer: yes. Individuals who graduate with at least a four-year college degree earn on average 84% more than workers with a high school diploma. Taking it a step further, recent research by Jon James, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland illustrates that a student’s choice of a major is a significant factor in determining her earning power after graduation. Not surprisingly, his research also showed students with an advanced degree are even further ahead salary-wise once they enter the workforce. The graph below tracks the so-called “college premium,” which compares average hourly wages for those with bachelor’s degrees or higher to the income earned by those who dropped out of college.

Small Stocks Come With Big Price Tags
The Wall Street Journal
We’ve spent the last few weeks harping on the recent rally in small-cap stocks and how it has helped give a boost to the broad market. But if you missed out on the rally, you may want to think twice about joining the party. Small caps are starting to look a bit pricey. The Russell 2000 index of small-capitalization stocks – mostly made up of companies with less than $2 billion market caps – is up more than 4% throughout the last two weeks and has risen 13% since early June, outpacing the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500.

GoDaddy Goes Down, Anonymous Claims Responsibility
CBS
GoDaddy, the domain registrar and Web hosting company, experienced outages Monday, perhaps taking millions of websites down as a result. “Status Alert: Hey, all. We’re aware of the trouble people are having with our site. We’re working on it,” @GoDaddy tweeted. While GoDaddy.com’s site is up and running, websites hosted by the company are still experiencing outages. “Some services are back online,” a GoDaddy spokesperson told CBS News. “It’s been intermittent and impacted our site and some of our customer sites. It started at about 10 a.m. PT and we are working to restore all service.” TechCrunch reported earlier that GoDaddy-hosted email addresses were down, as well. The blog suggests customers concerned with that their site has been affected can check online status at Down For Everyone Or Just Me.

Oreo’s 100-Day ‘Daily Twist’ Campaign Puts Cookie in Conversation
Ad Age Digital Next
At 100 years old, Kraft Foods’ Oreo seems younger than ever. The brand’s “Daily Twist” campaign has made the cream-stuffed sandwich a social-media darling and sometime daredevil. It kicked off June 25 with a polarizing image of the cookie, septuple-stuffed with rainbow filling to celebrate Gay Pride Month — a bold move for a brand that topped $2 billion in revenue last year. Since then, we’ve seen a Shark Week Oreo, a Mars Rover Oreo and a tribute to panda Shin-Shin’s newborn cub — just a handful of 100 iterations that will roll out daily through October. This group effort from an integrated agency team consisting of DraftFCB New York, 360i, Weber Shandwick, and MediaVest is part of Oreo’s centennial. The celebration kicked off in March with its “History” print campaign, which enlisted the cookie to depict historical milestones. That effort showed the cookie’s historic relevance while “Twist” contemporizes it in the context of current events. The brand’s birthday mission …

Shell Company Sues Facebook, Amazon Over Targeted Banner Ads
eWallstreeter
A Memphis-based shell firm say it owns the rights to a common form of internet advertising, and has filed patent infringement suits against several major companies. “B.E. Technologies LLC” claims that Amazon’s Kindle devices violate its technology for serving ads “in a personalized manner.” It has filed similar lawsuits against Facebook and LinkedIn. The patents in question date from 2000 and 2001 and describe the process of selecting interent ads based on what applications the viewer has been using on his or her computer. Here’s part of the abstract from US Patent 6,628,314 which B.E. Technologies claims Facebook is infringing: A method and apparatus for providing an automatically upgradeable software application that includes targeted advertising based upon demographics and user interaction with the computer. The software application is a graphical user interface that includes a display region used for banner advertising that is downloaded from time to time over a network such as the Internet. [..] when the user runs the program (such as a spreadsheet program), an advertisement will displayed that is relevant to the program (such as an advertisement for a stock brokerage).
