Using commercial web traffic data obtained from California-based Alexa Internet, Inc., Oxford researchers Dr. Mark Graham and Stefano De Sabbata created a choropleth map that illustrates the most visited web sites in each country. Each color represented each nation’s most viewed website. “The supremacy of Google and Facebook over any other site on the Web is clearly apparent,” the study authors wrote. “We also see an interesting geographical continuity of these two ‘empires.’

At a hearing on Warner/Chappell’s effort to dismiss much of the case, U.S. District Judge George H. Beer has had a brutal year: Sales of big brands are down, more young adults are drinking wine and spirits, and new competitive threats loom, including the legalization of pot in some states. Yet there was plenty of optimism in the air as nearly 4,000 distributors and suppliers gathered in Las Vegas last week for the National Beer Wholesalers Association annual meeting. While volumes are down, the industry remains hugely profitable. Almost everyone agreed beer won’t return to full health until it regains volume, which has been held down by the sluggish trends of bellwethers like Miller Lite and Bud Light.

Is America’s national check-splitting nightmare almost over? A group of Google employees have applied for a patent on a process that essentially splits restaurant checks. The process seems to be destined for some sort of app or calculator and would help groups figure out expenses when taking a trip, planning an event, or, say, eating out at a restaurant. In an example from the patent application below, the check-splitting process still requires some brain function: you would have to enter different amounts for different people based on what they ordered. Obviously time will tell if this process proves useful…
