Crisis Management: Sikh Shootings Shake Country in National Tragedy The Los Angeles Times A discharged Army veteran and racist advocate of white power acted alone when he attacked a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee and killed six people, officials said Monday. At a news conference in Wisconsin, local and federal officials formally named the shooter as Wade Michael Page, 40, who served more than six years in the Army until he was separated with a less than honorable discharge. Page had been demoted in rank from sergeant, according to an official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. Page was a “frustrated neo-Nazi who had been the leader of a racist white-power band,” according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extreme activity. Page told a white supremacist website in a 2010 interview that he had been part of the white power music scene since 2000, when he left his native Colorado …

Qualcomm Hires Ex-Intel Mobile Head for Top Marketing Job eWeek Qualcomm is putting Anand Chandrasekher, who left Intel in 2011 after 25 years with the company, in charge of its marketing and communications efforts. The former head of Intel’s mobility efforts will now be the top marketing official at Qualcomm, a chip maker whose ARM-based Snapdragon processors are found in smartphones and tablets and could expand into notebooks. Anand Chandrasekher, a 25-year veteran at Intel who until last year was one of the company’s senior vice presidents and general manager for the Ultra Mobility Group, is now the chief marketing officer at Qualcomm, the company announced Aug. 6. He will report to Steve Mollenkopf, Qualcomm’s president and chief operating officer. Mollenkopf said in a statement that Chandrasekher is “well-suited to help grow Qualcomm’s communications and marketing efforts across the world and to amplify our consumer offerings to new audiences.”

Wal-Mart to Add More Detail in Financial Reports after SEC Query Reuters Wal-Mart Stores Inc will tweak its future financial reports to add more detail on legal proceedings and cyber security after U.S. regulators asked the retailer to better explain certain matters in its latest quarterly and annual filings. Wal-Mart’s correspondence with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission took place in June and July and was made public on Monday. The letters include a reference to the “legal proceedings” section of Wal-Mart’s quarterly filing, an area under close scrutiny by investors since the New York Times reported an alleged past bribery scheme in Mexico on April 21. The SEC wrote to Wal-Mart Chief Financial Officer Charles Holley on June 8 with comments on the annual report for the fiscal first quarter that ended on April 30 and the fiscal year that ended on Jan. 31 …

Bernanke Says Economic Data May Mask Individual Suffering Bloomberg Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said gauges of the U.S. economy’s strength may fail to measure the suffering of individual citizens. “Even though some key aggregate metrics — including consumer spending, disposable income, household net worth, and debt service payments — have moved in the direction of recovery, it is clear that many individuals and households continue to struggle with difficult economic and financial conditions,” Bernanke said today in remarks prepared for a conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Federal Open Market Committee said on Aug. 1 it will pump fresh stimulus if necessary into the weakening economic expansion to boost growth and reduce an unemployment rate that’s been stuck at 8 percent or higher for more than three years. Employee Engagement: Like Bernanke, Businesses Should Ask If Employees Are Happy NBC Ben Bernanke wants to know if you are happy. The Federal Reserve chairman said Monday that gauging happiness can be as important for measuring economic progress as determining whether inflation is low or unemployment high. Economics isn’t just about money and material benefits, Bernanke said. It is also about understanding and promoting “the enhancement of well-being.” Bernanke and Fed policymakers rely on reports on hiring, consumer spending and other economic data when making high-stakes decisions about the $15 trillion U.S. economy. The Fed’s dual mandate is to maintain low inflation and full employment. “We should seek better and more-direct measurements of economic well-being,” Bernanke said Monday in a video-taped speech. After all, promoting well-being is “the ultimate objective of our policy decisions.” Few Americans are likely to say they are happy with the economy right now. Paid Media: Apple Doesn’t Need to Advertise New Products, Reveal Court Records Business Insider Apple no longer actually needs to do ANY advertising when it launches new products, marketing chief Phil Schiller testified Friday in the Apple v. Samsung patent trial in a San Jose, Calif., federal court. Instead, the company relies on these two strategies: 1. Rely on the media to create buzz for its products through positive reviews. 1. Product placement in TV shows and movies. The media is so reliably disposed to favor Apple’s products that when the iPhone was launched in 2007, the company didn’t do any advertising for a period, according to Bloomberg: Schiller, discussing the iPhone, said Apple decided not to pay for any advertising during a brief period after the device was introduced in January 2007 and when it went on sale later in the year. “We didn’t need to,” Schiller said.
