These are revolutionary times. Of course, this week marks May Day (here’s an NBC report on the origins of “Inernational Worker’s Day”) and Cinco de Mayo – both in honor of one form of revolution and uprising or another. But beyond that, people around the world are overthrowing governments and fighting for new freedoms. Closer to home, we’ve seen grassroots uprisings (whether on the streets or on the Internet) that have targeted laws, banks, broadcasters, non-profit foundations – you name it. Time magazine dubbed 2011 the year of The Protester, and things haven’t calmed down much in 2012.

Goldman Sachs Group Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein said Wednesday his recent public support for gay rights had cost the investment bank at least one client.At an event discussing Wall Street’s role in pushing for greater lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality across corporate America, Blankfein said his stance on the matter was “not without price.”Blankfein said there had been some “adverse reaction” on at least one occasion, where a money management client “did not want to continue a relationship” with Goldman in the wake of his advocacy. The U.S. DEA almost killed a UC San Diego college student by abandoning him in a prison cell for 5 days without food or water. Daniel Chong was imprisoned on April 21 when DEA agents raided the home of a friend he was visiting. Chong was detained for questioning but not arrested, not charged with a crime, and should have been released. Instead, agents locked him in a cell and forgot all about him. The PR response was atrocious: The DEA only issued an apology to Chong yesterday, two full days after the press began reporting on the incident, and a week after he was discovered near death. Yahoo launched a free marketing dashboard on Wednesday to boost its advertising appeal for small and midsized businesses by simplifying digital marketing for them.

The move comes as part of new CEO Scott Thompson’s strategy to narrow the company’s focus and boost its profit.

Yahoo’s dashboard tracks search listings in local search results and on platforms including Yelp, flagging listings that don’t include the business in question, for example. It also pulls information from social networks and other sources to show businesses what’s being said about them around the Web.

The dashboard additionally offers paid services, including Yahoo advertising and reputation management packages. …
