Social Media Silver Bullet, Penn State, the Vatican, and Bulls$#@t (a Rant) Social Media Zone…By Vicki @Smartwoman Flaugher Several scandals and troublesome events have me wound up this week. With the conviction of Penn State’s Sandusky for molesting boys, to the hiring of a Fox PR guy by the Vatican, my head just might explode. Throw in seemingly everyone’s comments about the part social media played to “cause” these scandals and I am seriously in Rantville. I think I will simply vent, ok?

PR Agency RF/Binder Joins Pro Bono Campaign for America MarketWatch The rule that PRs should not directly edit Wikipedia pages relating to their organisation or brand is the most important part of the new guidelines on Wikipedia use for PRs, according to the Chartered Institute of Public Relations professionals (CIPR).
The CIPR initially drafted the guidelines. The institute said that during the consultation period the document received more than 160 direct edits and more than 120 contributions to the discussion page.
The advent of clear guidelines has arrived after several incidents occurred in the national press referring to the use of the `dark arts` by PR firms on Wikipedia, whereby some manipulated Wikipedia entries to favour an organisation or an individual.
PRs are reminded that this use of the online encyclopedia is in fact the `antithesis of best practice public relations. Intentional deceit and anonymous or incognito activities are breaches of professional codes of conduct.` …

Whoops! Former Obama Adviser Caught Planning Astroturfing Media Blitz for Greece`s PR Makeover US News & World Report Let`s say you`re a former Obama adviser and you start your own political PR firm. And let`s say your firm pitches influential Greek Americans on a PR makeover to repair their country`s image and stature to the American public.
So you put together a presentation outlining how you`re going to plant op-eds in American newspapers, generate opposition research, mobilize grassroots organization, and more. Let`s say this presentation includes case studies of your previous behind-the-scenes work for Boeing, Comcast, and NBC. One says you generated “212 op-eds” to be seen throughout media to curry favor for a government contract for Boeing`s refueling tankers, which would generate several billion dollars in revenue from taxpayer money. And let`s say you then store that presentation online, allowing anyone access. You wouldn`t want the media to stumble across this presentation, would you? That`s what happened to PR firm McLeanClark …

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced the lawsuit Wednesday against Falcone and Harbinger Capital Partners, the firm he founded. The SEC also said that Falcone manipulated bond prices.
The SEC is seeking to ban Falcone from serving as an officer or director of any public company, along with unspecified penalties and restitution.
The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Manhattan, was expected.
Matthew Dontzin, a lawyer representing Falcone, said the allegations are without merit and that Falcone would challenge them in court. …

Fed Officials Differ on Whether More Easing Needed Reuters Top Federal Reserve officials differed on whether the U.S. central bank needs to be more aggressive in spurring economic growth, indicating another round of easing is far from certain.
Chicago Federal Reserve Bank President Charles Evans, one of the U.S. central bank`s strongest advocates for further monetary policy easing, said Wednesday he is flummoxed by the Fed`s timidity in the face of high unemployment and low inflation.
However, his colleague, Atlanta Fed leader Dennis Lockhart, said the Fed would only need to act further if the economy took a turn for the worse or if Europe`s simmering debt crisis boils over.
“I don`t think the conditions have developed that require us to bring out bigger guns quite yet,” Lockhart said in an interview with Nightly Business Report. An escalation of problems in Europe, a sudden slowing of U.S. economic growth, a spike in job layoffs, or the risk of a deflationary spiral might be triggers for more Fed action that could include another round of bond buying, Lockhart said …

As Obama Buys Up Time, NBC Executive Says Positive Ads Do Better at Olympics New York Times With the news that the Obama campaign has purchased $5.5 million in commercial time during the coverage of the London Olympics, an NBC executive had advice for both presidential candidates: Don`t go negative during the three weeks` worth of thrills of victory and agonies of defeat.
The executive, Seth Winter, the head of advertising sales for NBC`s Olympics coverage, on Wednesday confirmed the ad purchase by the Obama campaign and said that during the Games it should be all about accentuating the positive.
“What we`ve seen in all of our research is the creative has got to be upbeat,” Mr. Winter said. “It`s got to be empowering. It`s got to be positive.”
That was a lesson learned in the 2008 election, Mr. Winter said: “In the prior election, one of the candidates took another tack and I don`t think it served him well.” …
