Stewart Cheating Scandal Lessons: Crisis PR Pros Advise Wrongdoers to Come Clean ASAP in Social Media Era Boston Globe Last week, the blogosphere blew up with the news that the 22-year-old “Twilight” star had been unfaithful to Robert Pattinson. Within hours, Stewart and the 41-year-old Sanders, who is married with two children, released public statements apologizing to their loved ones. When most everyone can access news from their phone instantaneously and, thanks to Twitter, offer endless streams of speculation and judgment, crisis teams are no longer spending days or weeks crafting response to news of scandals. The only way to tamp down the roar of social media is to issue a statement as quickly as possible, PR experts say. “You can’t afford to be asleep at the switch or be slow at reacting,” says celebrity crisis expert Allan Mayer, who has counseled big names like Eminem, Johnny Depp, Halle Berry, and Steven Spielberg. “It used to be you could take a little time to gather your thoughts and figure out what you want to do. It’s a luxury none of us have anymore.” …

NYSE and SEC Review Wednesday Trading Problems on Wall Street The Los Angeles Times A trading glitch Wednesday morning led to some puzzling stock movements on Wall Street, prompting reviews by the New York Stock Exchange and securities regulators. “Irregular trading” in 148 stocks led the exchange to review activity after the opening bell, the exchange’s operator, NYSE Euronext, said in a statement. The trading problems caused the Standard & Poor’s 500 index to lose more than four points before the index regained its ground, Bloomberg News reported. The SEC said it is looking into the matter. “As is our practice, we are closely monitoring the situation and in continuous contact with the NYSE and other market participants,” an SEC spokesman said in an emailed statement. The issues appear to stem from a “technology issue” at Knight Capital Group, a major Wall Street brokerage firm based in Jersey City, N.J. After Knight identified problems in routing shares in the approximately 150 stocks, it suggested its market-making clients reroute orders, the brokerage said in a statement …
Fed Says Economy May Need Help, Keeps Policy on Hold Reuters The Federal Reserve stopped short of offering new monetary stimulus on Wednesday even as it signaled more strongly that further bond buying could be in store to help a economic recovery that it said had lost momentum this year. Fed officials described the economy as having “decelerated somewhat,” a change of tone from its previous assessment in June when it said the economy had been “expanding moderately.” The Fed’s policymakers also reiterated their disappointment with the slow pace of progress in bringing down the nation’s 8.2 percent jobless rate. The central bank dashed expectations among some investors by taking no new measures, sending U.S. stocks lower and the dollar higher against the euro and the yen …

Democratic Super PAC Reserving $30 Million for Fall TV Advertising CNN.com The Democratic super PAC backing President Barack Obama, Priorities USA Action, is significantly ramping up its media spending as it reserves $30 million in broadcast and cable ad time come this fall, sources familiar with the matter confirmed to CNN. The group, run by two former Obama White House officials, has not actually yet purchased the ad time in the critical states of Colorado, Iowa, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, the sources said. Because of increasing donations, the group is able to increase its advertising efforts and expand them into Iowa in September–a state it has not advertised in yet, the sources said. The group believes its ads hitting Mitt Romney over his time as head of the private equity firm Bain Capital have paid dividends, especially in Pennsylvania. As the new Quinnipiac University-CBS News-New York Times poll shows Obama with an 11 point lead there, Priorities is not reserving time there in September–only in October. Some of those resources will be shifted to other states. The super PAC had raised $16 million as of the end of June …
Facebook ‘Investigating’ Claims That 80% of Ad Clicks Come From Bots Forbes As covered here earlier this week, a company called Limited Run is pulling its entire Facebook presence and leaving the social media giant with some unsavory accusationt hat’s clouding the charge that up to 80 percent of clicks on its ads were coming from bots. These are serious allegations to come out as Facebook’s stock price continues to flounder. As a free service, advertising is always going to be one of Facebook’s core revenue generators, but it’s had a hard time proving it can generate the sort of activity needed to justify advertisers spending significant amounts of money.
Over at Wired, Liat Clark reports that other advertisers have also noticed that Facebook’s analytics are behaving a little bit suspiciously. “We’re currently investigating their claims,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement, according to Wired. “For their issue with the Page name change, there seems to be some sort of miscommunication. We do not charge Pages to have their names changed. Our team is reaching out about this now.” …
