Looking for a PR Job Overseas? Culturally Correct Resumes for Communicators The Hiring Hub… By Marie Raperto, CIM Search If the Olympics have done nothing else, they have highlighted cultural differences and the lure of overseas travel. So, if you have the urge to work in another country, the first item you must master is the CV or curriculum vitae. Your US-focused resume will not get you work in another country. While a resume talks about what you have done in your career and where you did it, your CV will tell employers who you are, where you have come from and whether you are qualified.

PR Bloopers: Facebook Engineering Director Accidentally Posts Photos of Mark Zucker Topless Online Mercury News Mark Zuckerberg may not know how to manage his own privacy settings. A photo of the topless Facebook founder and a couple of other guys with no shirts on is flying around the Internet, which is fueling Facebook conspiracy theories. The circumstances around the photo are unclear (it was at a wedding, BTW, with plenty of alchohol available). The image surfaced on the image-sharing site imgur, along with a photo caption. The poster claims the photo was “accidentally posted” by Facebook Director of Engineering Andrew Bosworth, who also appears in the pic on the far right. Uh-huh. The anonymous second poster claims Bosworth deleted the picture “seconds later,” but it was too late. Someone captured the image and put it on the Internet. Facebook hasn’t made any public comments about the picture so far …

Official Wire Reports: US PR Firms Market to Reach $13.4 Billion CommPRO.biz The US public relations firms market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2% over the next five years, tor each a total market value of $13.4 billion by 2017. The industry has experienced relatively slow revenue growth during the past five years, with declines in 2008 and 2009. In the five years leading up to 2012, it was estimated that industry revenue was only able to increase at a CAGR of 0.8% to be worth a market value of $10.9 billion. This slow growth was predominantly down to the fact that the recession forced many businesses to reduce costs wherever possible, including their marketing budgets. Through the next five years, the US public relations firms market will benefit from rising corporate profit and marketing budgets. While relatively strong growth is expected through to 2017, some of the gain will only be to counter losses that occurred during the recession …

Twitter Explodes Over Paul Ryan VP Announcement ADWEEK Turns out searching Twitter handles may have been the best way to predict Mitt Romney’s choice for vice president. While many in the media delved into Wikipedia for clues as to Romney’s running mate, a cursory Twitter search shows that newly announced VP candidate Paul Ryan’s Twitter handle (@PaulRyanVP) was created only a few days ago – Aug. 2, to be exact. Interestingly enough, using the same ‘FirstLastVP’ nomenclature, accounts for ‘TimPawlentyVP’ and ‘MarcoRubioVP’ were also made on the same day (Aug. 2). Perhaps the move was to throw the media off the scent, but since searches for ‘BobbyJindalVP’ and ‘ChrisChristieVP’ turned up no results, there is a possibility that as of Aug. 2, Ryan, Pawlenty, and Rubio were all still in play. There is, of course, also the possibility that the creation of the handles is a coincidence, but that appears unlikely. As expected, once the news broke in the early hours of Saturday morning, Twitter erupted with an astounding 865 tweets per minute around 1:10 AM EST, according to the official @gov Twitter account. As morning rolled around, tweets peaked as Romney officially announced his running mate around 9:29 AM EST, at a rate of 3,749 tweets per minute …

25% of Americans Access Social Media Via Mobile Mobile Marketing Watch Just how big is social media on mobile networks today? So big that one in four Americans now access social network sites via their mobile device on a regular basis. According to the latest estimates from eMarketers, social networking, aided by the widespread adoption of smartphones in the US, is “quickly making the jump to mobile.” By the end of this year, nearly 82 million US mobile users will use a social networking site on their phone at least monthly, or more than a quarter of the total US population. eMarketer says that most of these users–95.5% in all–will be checking social sites on a smartphone, and smartphone users are about twice as likely as overall mobile phone users to do so this year. But if you think one in four is a lot, by 2014, eMarketer believes nearly half of the total US mobile population will be mobile social networkers …

Economy: Growing Paychecks Boost Americans’ Purchasing Power Bloomberg Americans’ paychecks in the first half of 2012 grew at the fastest pace in five years, pointing to an improvement in purchasing power that may help propel the economic expansion. Wages and salaries for all employees increased at a 4.8 percent annual pace from January through June after adjusting for inflation, the most since March 2007, according to calculations by Harm Bandholz, chief economist at UniCredit Group in New York, based on data from the Commerce Department. The pickup contrasts with last week’s Labor Department report that showed the smallest gain in average hourly wages on record. The Commerce Department figures take into account the total number of people holding jobs and the length of the workweek, which is what shows up in Americans’ paystubs. The recent gains indicate consumers have the means to boost spending and shield the U.S. from any global slowdown as Europe’s debt crisis lingers and Asia cools …

Dog Days of August Spell Calm But No Relief Reuters Weakness almost everywhere with only the odd pocket of resilience. That’s been the state of the global economy for a while, and this is unlikely to be the week when things change for the better. Consumers and businesses are hanging fire because of doubts over U.S. tax and spending policies, how aggressively Beijing will respond to slowing Chinese growth and, above all, how the euro zone’s debt and banking crisis will unfold. “All of the data releases are still affected by the environment of uncertainty which is holding back activity across Europe,” said Peter Westaway, chief economist for Europe at Vanguard Asset Management in London. And with the dog days of August upon us, the next decisive moves on the euro front are probably three or four weeks away. Meanwhile, In the United States, worries are mounting that a spike in food prices caused by a severe drought in the Midwest will squeeze consumers’ disposable incomes. For now, though, economists expect Tuesday’s retail sales report for July to show a 0.2 percent rise …

Crisis Communications: Zynga Executive Bails Amidst Controversy Mobile Marketing Watch Embattled gaming firm Zynga is reeling from another debacle in the headlines today. On Thursday, word broke that the company’s chief operating officer John Schappert has abruptly departed from Zynga at a time when nothing appears to be going right for the social gaming giant. The resignation comes amidst a recent talent shakeup meant to give the company’s investors renewed hope and optimism about Zynga’s future. The resignation in question, Reuters confirmed, wasn’t the result of “any disagreement with the company on any matter relating to the company’s operations, policies or practices.” But it came as no surprise to Zynga’s followers after the social gaming company behind Facebook-based hits like “FarmVille” said earlier this month that Schappert had ceded many of his game development responsibilities while Zynga shuffled its top management ranks after reporting a net loss for its second quarter …

White House Won’t Denounce Anti-Romney Ad USA Today The White House is still refusing to denounce a campaign ad by an outside group with ties to President Obama that links Republican challenger Mitt Romney to a woman’s death from cancer. The standoff over the controversial ad, which has appeared online but not as a paid TV commercial, prompted a conservative group with ties to Romney to run its own ad — denouncing Obama’s refusal to denounce the original ad. What’s at stake here as both the Obama and Romney campaigns continue to go negative is the overall tone of the political debate, as well as Obama’s credibility in seeking to change the tone of the nation’s politics. But White House press secretary Jay Carney said it is Romney’s campaign, more than Obama’s, that has invested in false advertising — most recently with an ad that suggests the president is weakening the 1996 welfare law’s work requirement …

Print Ads to Rebound? JC Penney Looks to Newspapers in Revamped Marketing Push Ad Age Digital Next In the wake of bleak second-quarter results, JC Penney says it is shifting its marketing from brand building to business building. During a meeting with analysts to discuss second-quarter results, CEO Ron Johnson detailed the marketing shifts that have taken place since its chief marketer and merchandiser, President Michael Francis, abruptly departed after just eight months. JC Penney “went dark” in mid-June — the same time Mr. Francis departed — turning off TV ads, canceling the July catalog that was already printed and scrapping July newspaper inserts, Mr. Johnson said. The upbeat, colorful marketing–(see the spot below)–rolled out during Mr. Francis’ tenure made people rethink JC Penney and was entertaining, Mr. Johnson admitted, but it didn’t reach the core customer and didn’t build the business. Mr. Johnson also believes the brand was spending too much money on TV and not enough on print …
