Apple PR Misstep Show Importance of Federal Compliance Business Journals Apple is just the latest such company to learn that what you do–or don’t do–can impact a sizable amount of your overall business. When the company chose not to say whether its products complied with standards tested by the federal government’s Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, better known as EPEAT, it believed that either the decision would impact only its federal sales or that customer demand for popular items likes MacBooks or iPads would result in a de facto waiver of the standard. But here’s what actually happened. San Francisco banned the government purchase of several Apple products. The California State University system also took a dim view, as did other state and local government buyers. Suddenly, the company found itself not only with a potentially significant business risk, but a public relations nightmare that it didn’t anticipate. Faster than you can say “iPad3,” Apple back peddled and returns to compliance …

Mobile Marketing: LinkedIn Lands 23 Percent of Unique Visitors Via Mobile ADWEEK LinkedIn closed the second quarter with 174 million members, averaging two new members per second and more than 15% of those new members signing up through mobile devices, said CEO Jeff Weiner during the company’s second-quarter earnings call. Additionally, he said the company notched 131 million unique visitors in June, and 23% of the LinkedIn’s uniques come through mobile, he said. But just because mobile’s making up an increasing share of LinkedIn’s user activity doesn’t mean Wiener’s in a rush to throw ads at those users. LinkedIn’s marketing solutions business increased its revenue by 28 percent from last year to $63.1 million. Besides marketing solutions only made up 28 percent of the company’s total Q2 revenue, which jumped 89 percent year-over-year to $228.2 million and beat analysts’ estimates …

Six-Week Stimulus Watch for Bernanke and Fed Reuters Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke looks set to spend the rest of the summer waiting for signs that could tip the scales toward providing another round of stimulus for economy. On Wednesday, the U.S. central bank stopped short of resorting to new measures but signaled it was prepared to act unless the economy stages an unlikely comeback in the next six weeks. With the Fed’s next policy-setting meeting scheduled for Sept 12-13, guideposts toward yet more monetary easing look clear. On Thursday, the European Central Bank meets to consider how to stem the euro zone debt crisis that the Fed again on Wednesday suggested posed a threat to the sputtering U.S. economic recovery. But the chances of aggressive action by the ECB appear slim, with Europe divided on using the central bank to help countries struggling under heavy debts. On Friday, the U.S. employment report for July is unlikely to provide much relief from the recent slump in job creation and if repeated when the August job numbers are released in early September, it could strengthen the case for more Fed intervention …

GM CEO Says Marketing Approach Not Result of ‘One Individual’ Ad Age Digital Next Chairman-CEO Dan Akerson, referring to the impact of Joel Ewanick’s exit, told analysts and reporters on GM’s quarterly earnings call that the automaker’s marketing is a group effort, not a one-man operation. Asked about Mr. Ewanick’s sudden departure on Sunday from his role as global CMO, GM Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann began by saying, “The fundamental approach is, no change. The consolidation of agency spend, all the things we did with our media buy, those are all very real drivers of efficiencies and we’re absolutely going to continue with those.” then Mr. Akerson quickly jumped in before Mr. Ammann had finished speaking. Mr. Akerson said, “I know a lot of public views this as a personality-driven industry. It’s a team effort. What you saw in the marketplace was a thought-out strategy that was agreed upon as a team.” Mr. Ewanick, the rock-star CMO hired 26 months ago, was abruptly ousted on Sunday …
