AllThingsD reported Thursday that she is personally ushering through deals with Katie Couric and Conde Nast. A new strain of bird flu that can infect and kill animals has been discovered in chickens in poultry markets in China, according to a new study. Having studied samples from birds for the H7N9 virus, researchers at the University of Hong Kong said genetic tests suggested that the virus entered domestic ducks from wild birds and then infected chickens, which are probably the origin of infection in humans, says the study published Wednesday in the journal ‘Nature’, Xinhua reported. The research team also discovered a new virus called H7N7 in chickens. Laboratory tests showed H7N7 was also able to cause severe pneumonia in ferrets…

Time Warner Cable (TWC) will offer free antennas starting Friday, allowing customers to receive blacked-out CBS stations over the air. Customers will be able to collect them at local TWC offices. Word came via advertising Thursday, where TWC also told customers it would be offering a free Amazon gift card or movie on demand coupon. Customers will have to install the antennas themselves and have a compatible TV.

Li’s Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HKG:0013) conglomerate is accepting initial bids for the franchise, valued at as much as $4 billion, unnamed sources told Reuters. Japan’s Aeon Co. Ltd. Tesla Motors Inc. CEO Elon Musk said the electric-car maker intends to add factories in Europe and Asia, anticipating volume gains from a planned mass-market battery car. The company this year plans to make at least 21,000 of its $70,000 Model S premium sedans at its Fremont, Calif., plant, and double that in 2014. While the factory has capacity to produce as many as 500,000 vehicles a year, the addition of a smaller electric car priced about half that of Model S will require additional plants, Musk said.

There once was a day when stock photos were useful for brochures, magazine ads, and other printed material. A deal between Shutterstock and Facebook announced Thursday shows the new online direction for the industry, though. Under the partnership, businesses will be able to search for Shutterstock graphics through Facebook’s online ad creation tool. Use of an ad means Facebook will pay Shutterstock a royalty, part of which goes to the creator of the photo or illustration, Shutterstock said. Advertisers themselves don’t have to pay anything.

The Chief Research Officer at Turner Broadcasting offered a spirited endorsement Wednesday of Nielsen’s proposed $1.26 billion deal to acquire Arbitron. From his perspective, the media industry needs reliable cross-platform measurement that can serve as a currency — yesterday. And, he believes a marriage will move that along.

Yahoo (YHOO) had more unique visitors in the U.S. last month than any other Web company, including longtime No. 1 Google (GOOG), a coup for Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer as she seeks to boost traffic and ad sales at the lumbering Web portal. The more visitors the more ad clicks and ad sales, is the theory and, generally, the reality. Google, of course, remains far more profitable, with far faster revenue growth, than Yahoo. But this is the first time since May 2011 that Yahoo Web properties have topped Google’s in U.S. unique visitors.

London-based framebuilder Tom Donhou has managed 80 mph on a hand-made bicycle on the open road – though indoor tests ultimately revealed his bike was capable of reaching 102 mph. Donhou’s bike is a custom-engineered contraption that he assembled with the help of a few friends, all for the purpose of showcasing the value of backyard engineering. And, of course, for making a bike go really fast. By comparison, the average person on a normal bike would probably have to push it to reach speeds around 25 mph.

The Windows Phone 8 operating system will be racking up some frequent flier miles thanks to a new partnership between Delta Air Lines and Nokia. Delta will equip more than 19,000 flight attendants with the new Lumia 820 handsets, which will let Delta employees offer near-real-time credit card processing and e-receipts that can be emailed to fliers. Soon, they will also have the ability to read coupons displayed on a mobile device.
