Pre-Employment Testing: Four Ways It Can Help You Land the Job and Grow Your Career
Many employers are now using employment assessments to help with the hiring process. From an HR professional’s perspective, these assessments can help to determine how an individual will fit within the corporate culture and show behavioral traits. What’s more, employment assessments also help to:
- Reduce turnover.
- Increase employee productivity, performance and attendance.
- Streamline the hiring process when companies are interviewing a high volume of candidates.
I always hear a collective groan when I tell my candidates that they will have to take assessment tests. But these tests can only help you. Here’s how:
- These tests can help you PREDICT whether you will fit into the work culture. If you are unhappy in your current position, you don’t want to walk into a similar situation. To do your best, you need to like where you work and be happy in the environment. At test is a great peek into what your work situation will be like.
- Assessments tests SHOWCASE your skills more deeply than the resume. Many prospects feel a resume isn’t enough of a platform by which to articulate all they can do. Assessment tests, however, provide a perfect additional opportunity to showcase your skills.
- Testing can MATCH you to the right position. Rather than using a cookie-cutter approach — i.e., matching a job description to a person’s background — testing can help the manager see the whole candidate and what they have to offer. This can help ensure a better fit for you.
- Testing can create a PERFORMANCE model and baseline to help you grow your career. This allows hiring managers to use a model based on previous top performers. It will help them to see if you are a good fit and how they will need to help develop your skills further.
The takeaway: Don’t be afraid of testing, — embrace it. In the end, testing will help you to be more successful.

I totally disagree that these tests (that I find akin to Cosmopolitan magazine’s “does your boyfriend like you” quiz) give any meaningful insight into who you are and what you can do for the company. As for telling me if it’s a place where I’d want to work – well, if they have to resort to one of these “personality tests” I figure management is incapable of making any gut decisions.
I am one of the creators of Test Burner (http://www.testburner.com). We created a browser based testing platform. One of the major verticals we see ourselves getting into is pre-employment evaluations and screening. We’d love to hear what your needs and wants are when it comes to pre-employment testing. Come on over and let us know.
