LinkedIn's Annual List: 10 Buzzwords to Banish from Resumes and Online Profiles
It’s that time of year. LinkedIn released its list of the year’s most overused professional buzzwords. These are words that sound nice, but are totally meaningless. How many are you using? Review the list below and give yourself the seasonal gift of a better, buzzword-free resume and online profile that will attract recruiters, HR managers and others:
- Dynamic
- Communication Skills
- Problem-Solving
- Innovative
- Motivated
- Track record
- Extensive Experience
- Effective
- Organizational
- Creative
In other words: “This motivated and dynamic professional with creative and innovative communication skills combined with an effective and extensive track record of experience and problem-solving within an organizational environment is no more.”
See, they really are meaningless!

So, if we should banish these professional “buzzwords” from our resumes, what are the suggested replacements? I often go to the thesaurus to avoid hackneyed expressions, but these are often the words that are listed in position requisitions! It is a conundrum!
I agree with the commenter who asked what words should be instead?
Maybe: Adequately-qualified communicator who carefully considers all options before suggesting anything. Avoids offering rash cutting-edge solutions so as not to threaten older employees who have set track records that include longer experience. Will strive to only be as effective as approved by more senior employees in the organization. Creativity is not a goal but will work toward it as necessary.
When do I start? (I need a ride every day.)
Creativity is a goal. And a necessary element: beginning, to end.
