Thought the Newsweek cover line (Gay Pres) was pretty silly but it made me immediately read the great article. But I'm already a subscriber, so would have likely read the story in any case.
The line may have worked best for news stand buyers seeing and thinking WTH?

Completly agree on point no4. The interviewer probably will understand what yu do but you have to get into the interview. It could even be the case that the first screening of your CV is done by a computer parsing program and if you don't have the right words, phrases, structure etc it might never get seen by a human.

I hate to disagree that the magazines are getting more of a tabloid mentality. In fact editors are getting smarter and better in getting and grabbing the attention of readers and customers. Only a fool will fall for a gimmicky cover, but the smart readers are those who are grabbed by the cover and kept by the content. There is too much noise out there, magazines have to do something to break away from all that noise. Short and simple, everyone is talking about those magazines now, and there is nothing wrong about that.

Straight-laced Bloomberg Businessweek got this trending in January with two jetliners mating. With the cover headline, "Let's Get It On," the artist's composite aimed to shock even though the article was a pretty routine follow to the United-Continental merger story. Not sure it's a tar pit, Donna, but we're certainly seeing more of a tabloid mentality among the new breed of magazine editors.

Oh great. Now magazines will become like reality shows... each cover more daring than the last, until we're eventually sinking into a tar pit.

I totally agree with what Thresa mentioned in this article. if you leave someone out of the storytelling atmosphere the end result may not have the impact as what you have desired.I am a Communications Grad Student at Eastern Michigan University looking to gain much more in the PR field.

You are most welcome, Stephanie! What I hoped this article could/would do is put things in a constructive perspective. I hear (and have seen firsthand) less-than-ideal practices from both sides. The truth is: We have a lot to learn from one another!

Thank you so much for this! I read so many articles about how much reporters hate PR people (in a nutshell) and it makes me so angry - like they're better than everyone.
My theory is that PR people don't complain about the (sometimes) abusive relationship for fear of being black listed. We're all just trying to do our jobs. Help each other out a little and give some respect. "Give us a break" indeed :)

I completely agree with everything you've said here, Donna, and you've made some spot-on points. I think both professionas (editorial and PR) tend to be very thankless professions. And to your point, there are lousy PR people out there. But the good ones - and there are GREAT ones out there - truly strive to be a helpful resource as opposed to the annoying gnats we're often labeled.

I also have been on both sides of the desk, so I empathize with everyone. I have to be an apologist for the reporters when they get my boss's quotes wrong, and I have to explain why a ten-minute TV interview was cut to three quotes in the final version.

But reporters often have no idea how difficult it can be to be in PR... how many clients want their company names on the front page, how many of them believe that if they buy ads it automatically qualifies them for a feature story, and how many believe that if their PR people write a decent story, it will be published word-for-word in a newspaper. "PR is easy," they say. "Just pick up the phone and call a reporter."

Imagine that! Reporters are standing by, just waiting for our story!

So yes, I hope the editors and media people will have a little patience. When we call to follow up on a press release, it's primarily because our bosses or clients are breathing down our necks. Believe me, "call-downs" are not our most favorite thing to do.

Granted, there are lousy PR people out there... the ones who don't think of it as a real profession. But I had my life brightened considerably a few weeks ago. A friend who had been a newspaper city editor for many years changed careers and went into PR. He lasted only a few months. He said he never realized how hard it was to get those stories placed.
